My son just received a rejection letter from USMA. He was told by his admissions officer about a month ago that he was recommended for prep school. The rejection letter did not say anything about an offer to attend the prep school. Is this offered separately and if so, when should we hear something? Thanks!

Yep, offered separately.
He should be in touch with either his MALO or admissions officer as to the status. IF he will accept the offer then he needs to convey that clearly.
It can take a while.

Obviously I don't know the exact answer to your question, and I'm sure they can offer up until USMAPS "R" Day just like the do at USMA "R" Day, I'll just share with you our experience from last year. I don't recall DS receiving a rejection letter from the USMA and we save just about everything. He did receive an appointment to USMAPS and that letter stated and I quote: "Congratulations! The Admissions Committee has selected you for an appointment to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School...While you were not selected for the Academy this year,..." so I guess that was his combination rejection letter and congratulation letter.
The letter was dated February 18, 2009 and he was to make his decision by April 4, 2009, about two weeks.
