I know the prep school is reserved for Air force soldiers and selected USAFA applicants, but I was wondering if anyone knows how many USAFA applicants are chosen each year and when USAFA would inform those who receive a USAFA Prep school appointment.

Unsure about the official USAFA Prep School, but Falcon Prep gets sent out mid April. I found out 2 weeks to the day after I got my first rejection letter.

USAFA prep

I'm not sure what you mean by "reserved for Air force soldiers." The prep school is about 10 months of classes for mostly kids out of high school that applied but were not appointed to USAFA. A small number (maybe 60) or fewer prior enlistees go to the prep school because they have been out of school for a few years. As for when they notify applicants of an offer to the prep school, it is usually a week or two after the last of the appointments are sent out. I'm not sure how many USAFA applicants receive offers to the prep school, maybe someone else can post with that info.

I think I heard about 200? Though I'm not entirely sure. From what I've picked up, USAFA Prep is where many Prior-Enlisted will go, along with recruited athletes who are not quite up to par academically to enter USAFA directly out of high school. There are also about 90 odd slots for Falcon Foundation prep (a similar program with something like a 99% appointment rate).

The Prep school is for those who the academy wants, but admissions feels they need a little more academic preparation. Usually, there are a some future athletes, some prior-enlisted, and a few "normal" (for lack of a better term) people.

(For future reference, the Army has soldiers while the AF has airmen.)
