Prep School?

However, US Code dictates that only 85 may be appointed each year by the Sec of the Navy from enlisted members of the regular Navy and regular Marine Corps
as well as
85 may be appointed each year by the Sec of the Navy from enlisted members of the Reserve Navy and Reserve Marine Corps.

(These numbers are the same for Army and AF)

I have never quite figured out if Midshipmen Candidates are Regular or Reserve - but I think they are Reserve, unless they came from Active Duty.
Regardless the total is only 170 appointments.

With close to 300 Midshipmen Candidates at NAPS some are going to have to receive a Nomination from another source.
Therefore - all Midshipmen candidates (as well Cadet Candidates) should apply to all Nomination sources.

Good info: thanks for putting that out, but I have to disagree. I attended NAPS last year and in the application system for the Academy, every NAPSter received the Secretary of the Navy appointment. Yes, during the year we are required to attempt to get another nomination. At the same time, no one will penalize you if you don't manage to secure one. My original nomination rolled over automatically (Child of Deceased Veteran) but I also received the SECNAV one as well.
As far as being active duty or reserve, we are kind of both. It is very much like the Academy where a midshipman is considered active duty. Our job is to attend class though.
Maybe that 85 nominations does not take into account the NAPS class?

What you do not have anyway of knowing is WHO the appointee is actually charged against. All 300 may have gotten a nomination from the Sec of the Navy - there is a good chance that not all 300 are charged against his numbers. That is why the Academy really wants applicants to apply for all nominating sources - it gives the Academy the most flexibility in putting together the strongest class.

Mine Mid received 3 nominations - we were invited to all three receptions for receiving an appointment - to this day I can not tell you which member of congress he is actually charged against - nor do I really have a need to know.

I had recently just been picked up for a Foundation Scholarship and will be attending prep school for a year. The way this works is you apply for USNA, then based on your application they can recommend you to the Foundation Scholarship program. The Foundation then contacts you and asks you to fill out a form they send you asking for basic info, sat scores, transcript, and an activities list. THEY then decide who they will sponsor (around 70 out of over 300 the pamphlet said). If they decide to sponsor you you have to sign a contract with them stating that if you are offered an appointment after a year of prep school that you will accept it, otherwise you owe them the money they spent sponsoring you at that school (unless its for a reason "beyond your control"). You do have to reapply for a nomination that year while your in prep school and retake your CFA. 95% percent of Foundation Students receive an appointment. Hope this helps.

Respectfully,
Dan
