Prep School

deal thank you

i can wait i have a feeling i will be doing that alot in the future

My daughter is at MMI right now as a Coast Guard Academy Scholar, so maybe I can help with some of the Prep School questions. I believe they accepted 60 students into this program this past year. Most went to NMMI, about 15 went to Marion. Their obligations this year include retaking the SAT – I think most, if not all of them took it twice. They take SAT prep classes the fall semester, to help them improve their scores. They must stay in contact with their Coast Guard Academy advisor on a weekly basis – mostly, I believe this consists of e-mails. I’m not sure what my daughter tells her advisor, but I believe it includes things like how she did on tests, any rank changes, etc. The CGAS kids have to maintain their grades – I think it is to get As and Bs and try to improve their PFE scores. No major honor violations – Captain Bibeau, during a parent’s Q&A session, mentioned that they lose a couple of kids every year for that (stealing or other honor offenses).

The CGAS kids started out at the Academy on July 27th – August 5th (about 10 days). The kids going to NMMI did not go home – they flew straight to New Mexico at the end of Orientation. The MMI kids went home for about one week before they needed to report to Alabama. The Coast Guard paid for their transport from the Academy to home & home to Alabama. At this point, they are E-2s and are receiving pay (part of the many things they do during orientation is set up their Navy Federal account for direct deposit.) The money they receive as a E-2 will pay for their room & board while at prep school. The USCGA pays for their tuition. They will have money left over!
As far as when they will get that appointment, from the most recent information they were given – it sounds like most of them won’t know for sure until after mid-terms, or sometime right around Spring break (it can’t come soon enough for us!!!!)

How exciting!!! Thanks for your info!!!!

Thanks
I also kinda think a year of prep would help almost all canidates

I know that, although my daughter wishes she were at the academy this year, when forced, she will admit that this year of prep school has been invaluable to her - prepping her mentally and physically so she can be successful at the academy. Well worth the extra year if it means she can realize her long term goals!
