I just received a NROTC scholarship, but I had spondylosis from wrestling about a year and a half ago. Fracture of L5 on the right side. I had a brace for the first two months and have done my physical therapy. The fracture hasn't filled with bone and probably will not, but I am pain free and can exercise vigorously. Swimming and diving aren't issues either, I completed a few scuba certifications with this and had no issues at all. Based on what I have read here, I am anticipating that I will get DQ'd immediately; is there anything I can do now to help improve my chances of getting a waiver?

Important: I have not had my medical eval by DoDMERB yet but have filled out the medical history forms. Is there anything I should do in preparation for the eval that would help?

I have already been accepted to VMI where my scholarship is placed.

Anyone who has experience with this: what helped you get a waiver?

Any help is really appreciated, thanks.

Did you get your waiver?

DS in the same boat, suffered Spondylosis a year ago from a bad fall playing volleyball. He recovered and finished PT in time to pass his PRTs back in January and has participated back in his HS varsity sports (basketball and volleyball). Accepted his NROTC scholarship just a week ago and placed at Oregon State. Waiting for DodMERB waiver decision. Let's keep each other posted. Praying and hoping for the best.

Hey! I am also waiting for a waiver decision. My waiver was submitted last Tuesday and it says “under waiver decision”. My waiver was for having an IEP in high school but I haven’t used it since. Hopefully I hear something back soon. Does anyone know a rough wait time for the decision to be made?

Our older DS went through this Medical Waiver process for exzema that showed in his medical history when he applied to the Service Academy. I remember he submitted the relevant requirements including a doctor's ceritification that it is already cleared/cured as he had this when he was very young. When he got his appointment, waiver got approved.
