I am applying to the AFA and also AFROTC. I just recieved a letter saying I did NOT recieve a congressional nomination. My dad (former AFA liaison) told me that our district in Florida is one of the most competitive when it comes to those nominations and appointments, and not to be too discouraged because I still have a presidential nomination.

I don't want to suffer for a few more months just to be disappointed again when I don't get an appoinment, so how realistic is an appointment looking at this point?

I'm a lot stronger on my academics and extracurricular side, 1300 SAT, 4.4 GPA weighted, President of Tri-M (music honor society), almost an Eagle Scout, brotherhood OA, Troop SPL, many other things. And my fitness scores are pretty weak actually, I'll be working on it everyday through this month and January. Mile about 8 or 9 minutes, 3 pullups, 40 pushups, 60 situps, 51 ft basketball throw, 8.1s shuttle run. I'm going to focus on mile, pullups, and basketball throw for the next month and a half.

Do I need to work really hard to compete with other presidential nominees? Is it attainable at this point? I guess I'm looking for encouragement or a reality check, thanks guys.

Only 100 appointments are granted out of the pool of candidates with presidential nominations.

Did you apply for nominations from your senators? Do not give up hope, there are always a few people who do not get nominations who the Academy accepts.

You have an outstanding GPA, is your 1300 SAT score just Critical Reading plus Math? Are you a male or a female? The CFA scores could improve, but you already know that. Also, do you play any team sports? The board weighs the CFA score more when you do not play sports.

There is always a chance of getting a Presidential Nom. I would definitely finish my application:thumb:

I do not think you need a reality check:wink:

Hold on, have you received a presidential nomination? If so, I wouldn't be stressing too much my friend.

Yes, I do have a presidential nomination, sorry that was unclear. I did not get the congressional one, and I actually missed the deadline for the Senator Nominations in Florida when I finally made up my mind to apply.

As for fitness stuff, I am a male, and I don't play any team sports. I like to pass off Boy Scouts as my fitness extracurricular since I like hiking and camping.

So just some higher CFA scores will make me competitive with other presidential nominees? At this point I'm just shooting for "average" on my CFA.

I am from Colorado and I received a presidential nom. I applied to all my MOC but did not get anything from them. If you receive a presidential and no other nomination they will put you in front of the kids who have multiple nominations. In other words, if you have a presidential nomination and they want you, you should be fine, but you need some above average CFA scores (not a max, just above the averages listed).

I talked to my counselor after I got rejections from all 3 of my MOC's and he told me that they save the superintendent and presidential for those who are unable to get one from a MOC (of course the presidential can only be used for those who have a military connection through their parents). I had a presidential so I guess that was his way of telling me not to give up.

So you got appointed with a presidential nomination? What did your scores look like?

Thats awesome to have a Presidential Nom! Just work on your CFA scores- but from another candidate's viewpoint you look like you have a fighting chance of getting accepted.

in this process there is alot you can't control.... focus on what you can control like your CFA. My suggestion would be to do the CFA as your workout 3 to 4 times a week. the "off" days work on endurance like a long run and practice the bb throw and pullups - there are alot of threads with advice on improving the CFA on all the different academy threads. Good Luck!

Thanks for the posts. I'll start doing the CFA a lot more, each practice run I've done improves, so that's obviously a good practice to do.

Thanks for the encouragement too, I won't go down without a fight. You can all probably understand how stressful it can be competing against other candidates with 4.0 unweighted GPAs, 1500 SAT scores, and 12 pullups :shake:

Well, don’t lose faith! Remember most appointments don’t come out for a while, and you can still update your application.

Presidential Nominations

Could someone get a presidential nomination if their grandfather received the Congressional Medal of Honor?

Do you mean you can resubmit a CFA with better scores? I thought everything you turned in was final.

You can update your application with newer SAT/ACT scores, additional clubs and leadership, etc... But no, you can't update with "Better" CFA scores. Once those are posted, that's it for that.

Thought so, thanks. I'll just wait until I'm happy with the scores to submit. I'm thinking around late January.

No.

Presidential nominations are for the sons/daughters of military members (there are some qualifications required).

There is a separate category for the sons/daughters of recipients of the Medal of Honor, but not grandchildren.
