When my son received his nomination letter for the USNA and USAFA, it did not state that he received the principal nomination....nor did it state that he did not receive the principal nomination. Does silence in this matter typically mean that our MOC doesn't choose a principal nominee? Or is it typical for MOC's letters to remain silent only when one is not chosen as the principal nominee?

The MOC can put anything in the letter that he or she would like. I don't know if there is a typical way to word it, but in any case, the only way to know for sure if they didn't state it explicitly, is to call and ask.
