So I live in Utah and got a call last week from Senator Mike Lees office saying I had been given a nomination. I got my letter today and it says: "I am pleased to give you my nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point." Does this mean I am the principal nominee to USMA? I know someone got a letter from Mike Lee's office that said he was qualified for a nomination but not that he had received it. So we are both confused. Also as of right now both of our Portals don't show any nominations. Thanks for the help and insight!

From that description it does not sound like it. The letter would have explicitly said "I am pleased to give you my PRINCIPAL nomination". You can call your MOC Office and ask what type of nominations they give out because you are confused and they should be able to help.

    Just a note on timing:
    1) MOC decides on who gets nominations
    2) MOC informs:
    A) Individual via phone or letter
    B) SA through a specific form
    3) SA associates nomination form with specific candidate file.

A and B could happen in any order and can be separated by weeks depending on when they get around to sending the form to WP. 3 usually happens within 24 hours of WP getting the form.

Thanks for that timeline, I guess step three finally happened, cause my portal says UT61, what does that mean?

I think it means you have a nomination from the Category/Class 1 Senator in your state. Although each senator represents the whole state, they actually have "seats" or categories based on when their election terms are staggered. According to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_United_States_Senators Senator Hatch is your class 1 senator, but you mention Senator Mike Lee as sending you a letter. Is it possible you are receiving a nomination from Senator Hatch also?

In Texas, Senator Ted Cruz is the junior senator, but he has the Category 1 seat. So his nomination shows up as TX61. At least that's my understanding. I know some posts here said it was the senior senator that has the "1" and the junior senator that has the "2." I received a letter from Senator Ted Cruz notifying me of a nomination. Thereafter, my portal showed TX61. And I haven't heard a word from Senator Cornyn, positive or negative, and he would be the senior senator.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. Maybe WP has its own numbering system for the senators.

For what it's worth, my son's Naval Academy portal said "Senator 2" -- which his admissions counselor told him it didn't mean the junior senator. If you look at the wiki just referenced, the senator my son got a nomination from the senator that is a "class 2" -- although he is our senior senator. Our junior senator deferred to the senior senator as not to duplicate slates, so son didn't get a nom from him. No way to test the theory, but if he had, I assume he'd show up as "Senator 3" in the portal -- which would be odd to look at.

...and my DS's nom for USMA is listed as KS62, and I know it's from the junior senator even though his "class" listed on the link above is "3".

18'er -- is this a Principal nomination? Could a "1" mean Principal and "2" mean non-Principal? Just wondering...

Typically the "1" after a Senator's state code would refer to the senior senator and the "2" would designate the junior Senator. Could possibly be an entry error when your portal was updated. Unlikely to get noms from both Senators unless they don't communicate about their selections. Your portal will not designate the type of nomination you received concerning "principal" or "competitive". Keep updating that file until the deadline. Good Luck!

I don't think so. I think you get that verbiage in the letter from the MOC. I'm no expert. though.

Go to the website that lists United States Senate members. (I don't have enough posts to include the actual URL.) You can look up the Senator that nominated you. He/she will be a class 1, 2 or 3. The class corresponds to what year their term expires. I don't know for sure but it makes sense that it answers your question.

61 and 62 just refer to the two senators. With CA having 53 reps, the 60s are the only safe numbers nationwide that will do so the coding for all senators. 61 used to be the senior and 62 used to be the junior, but that might have gone out the window with the electronic system and trying to keep all the records straight/correct count of the use of the 5 vacancies since they do tend to switch much more often now.

Thanks for the help, the discussion on this thread has really helped me make sense of the last few days. I was lucky enough to get two more nomination from my Congressman and the other Utah Senator. 3Q'd and triple nominations have me excited but now its the waiting game. So thanks for the help again and good luck to all trying to get in!
