hello everyone,

I just had a quick question I was hoping to get some help on. I'm currently prior service and looking into Rotc programs. My question is. Would I still receive E-5 BAH if I'm on an Rotc scholarship? Thanks everyone in advance.

I was in your situation back in 2013 when I first started rotc. I do indeed receiver my Gi bill benefits on top of the scholarship. I elected for the chapter 30 benefits because you get more money. Feel free to PM me for any more questions.

So I'm not sure how it works to combine an ROTC scholarship AND GI Bill benefits, but I'm wondering if it would be a "waste" of the benefit....?

The GI Bill benefits can be saved and used by a spouse or children (or both) at a later date. (He went through college on ROTC scholarship well before officers earned a GI Bill benefit, and also had already gotten a master's degree... he has no desire for a PhD, so he transferred the benefits to me and the kids so it wouldn't go unused.) Is it a "waste" to burn through both the scholarship benefit AND the GI Bill benefit at the same time? I don't know for sure... just bringing up the question... I was able to use part of my husband's GI Bill benefits to finish my schooling... and there is some left that our kids can use.

It could be seen as not using the benefits in the most efficient way possible. If you used the post 9/11 (chapter 33), then your post 9/11 benefits would pick up the tab for your tuition and also pay you E-5 BAH (w/dependents) at the rate for your local area. Any remaining balance would be paid by your ROTC scholarship, however, it would probably be zero balance. So essentially you're wasting your scholarship. You could elect to use the MGIB chap 30 benefits which pays a monthly amount which is deposited directly into your bank account. You typically would receive more money with the chap 30 benefits if you have a scholarship covering your tuition because the payout tends to be higher than the post 9/11's E-5 BAH rate.
