I know they do a 'prisoner' exchange before the army/navy game. It is my understanding it is returning USMA cadets back to USMA and midshipmen back to USNA-after they spent a semester "abroad" at the other Service Academy.

How does one get to participate at a semester at the other S.A.?

Has anyone on this board tried it and what are your thoughts?

Unless things have changed, the exchange occurs at the beginning of the football game. It is only for the duration of the game; the cadets/mids remain at the SA through the end of the semester and then return to their respective Academy.

You apply to exchange and are selected based on merit, etc. Typically, you have to stand very high in your class, have no major conduct issues, be good at PT and also be able to continue your major at the other school.

DD's roommate did a semester at USMA. She was very high in the class and a prior enlisted Marine and was exchanged during Army/Navy. Ran quickly to her Company as they had not seen her for a while. It is a fun thing and a great tradition.

    SA2017,

The Commandant of Midshipmen and his/her selection board determine who go on exchange. Basically, the bottom line is that when you are at another SA, you represent USNA. Therefore, the Commandant isn't going to send a MIDN who won't do well in the classroom, be an active participant, lack in PT readiness, etc.

Semester exchange is dene during your Junior (C2C) year. You apply for it your sophomore year. You can exchange to USMA, USNA, USAFA or USCGA. You must be able to continue your studies in your academic major.

If you think you want to apply for the exchange, talk to your advisor early on (freshman year) so you can structure your classes accordingly.

If you go on exchange to USAFA you often get to do one of their special programs like powered flight, jump, or soaring.

Makes sense. My nephew semester exhanged at USAFA, and was a Trident Scholar, so it does seem that exhange mids need to be highly ranked.
