Prospective Cadet

There isn't a spot on the application for an essay if I recall. But they ask about plenty of other things. They're looking for well-rounded individuals. As for the other colleges section, if you aren't planning on applying to other colleges then leave it blank. I would strongly suggest that you apply to other schools though. Other SMC's or in-state schools would be good. It's always good to have options, especially when you consider how expensive the Citadel can get (substantially for out of state).

Okay, so it's been a while and I'm sending in my application this week so here are some updated stats...

I have my entire application filled out and it's ready to be sent, however I've got a few questions on the application essay... I looked around on this forum and I found that the Citadel doesn't even look at the essay. Is this true, and if so should I even bother writing one up?

Also, I'm pretty much locked on to the Citadel, but on the application they ask for other colleges to which I'm applying. I don't actually plan on applying to any other colleges (I'm applying this week, so I'll know very soon and if there's a problem then I'll deal with it), so should I just leave this area blank? Or should I just list three other SMC's?

Dave: even if you believe that are 100% lock at the Citadel or any other school- you are making a mistake not applying to any other schools - even as remote plan B schools. If a career in the army taught me anything - it is that nothing ever works out exactly the way you plan and you need to have contingency plans in place. If you have given no thought to a backup plan then you will be scrambling to get an alternative in place should something not go according to plan. And you should look honestly at your stats and understand that you should not feel you are a lock- you have a GPA and class rank that is lower than the average for the class of 2013 at The Citadel. I'm sure that you are a good candidate- but at this point that is all you should be certain of. Have a back up plan- you can wait a while to turn in your applications, but HAVE A BACKUP PLAN with backup schools.
If they ask you for an Essay- you should write one unless someone on this forum is actually an admissions officer at The Citadel and has given you their name and told you not to do so. On the other hand if it is not part of the application then they probably are not going to do much with one. If they say an essay is optional but they give you an opportunity and means to submit one- Opt to write one as it gives you a chance to expand on why you are the candidate that they can't turn down.

I realize how foolish I sounded, but what I meant was that because I'll know very early (I was told by an admissions officer before Labor Day) if I'm in, I'm not really looking at any other schools at the moment. If I don't get into the Citadel, then I'll have a lot of time to look at and apply to other SMCs (deadline for VMI is February, Norwich is May, etc) and to beef up my grades and test scores. And even if I do get into the Citadel, I will most likely be applying to other SMCs anyway and perhaps a civilian college (as a back-up if I get injured and physically disqualified) later on next year, but as of right now I'm not looking at other schools and therefore will not be listing any other schools in the application packet.

Also, this morning I called Admissions and asked about the essay, and the admissions officer said that I do not have to include it in the application. And from what I've heard on this forum from past Citadel applicants (http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=3504), they don't even read it. If I don't get in right away, I still have a lot of time and if I have to apply a second time, then I'd most likely include an essay. (The reason as to why I'm not writing one right now is that I'm leaving tomorrow for a "band tour" and I won't be home until the end of the month, and I want to get my application in as soon as possible. Because the essay is not considered and not even mentioned in the application packet, I'm just going to be sending everything in this week. The guy at admissions said that I'd probably know by mid-to-late August).

My daughter just received her academic acceptance to The Citadel. Probably will set up a pre-knob visit for after soccer season.
