public vs.private

Public vs Private University GPAs, read this article:

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/19/want-a-higher-g-p-a-go-to-a-private-college/
Private schools, by this data, are about .3 higher.
Interesting:
For the first half of the 20th century, grading at private schools and public schools rose more or less in tandem. But starting in the 1950s, grading at public and private schools began to diverge. Students at private schools started receiving significantly higher grades than those received by their equally-qualified peers — based on SAT scores and other measures — at public schools.

In other words, both categories of schools inflated their grades, but private schools inflated their grades more.

The authors suggest that these laxer grading standards may help explain why private school students are over-represented in top medical, business and law schools and certain Ph.D. programs: Admissions officers are fooled by private school students’ especially inflated grades.

Additionally, the study found, science departments today grade on average 0.4 points lower than humanities departments, and 0.2 points lower than social science departments

Hard to justify the higher tuition costs at some privates, especially small lesser known privates, if the school can't show the benefit of higher GPA's.

I am officially out. I will no longer be posting. Any AFROTC candidate or cadet that wants to talk/question please pm me.

I will be checking pms, but will no longer post. I am here if you need anything...sounding board, guidance, whatever. I hope that other posters can guide, I believe in my heart they can and will.

Drawing Conclusions for Statistics Can Be Dangerous

I admit grades seem higher than in my day, but it seems like I could drive some big trucks through this study.

Where do MCAT and LSAT scores enter into the inflated grades resulting in "over-representation" for privates at medical schools or law schools (one of the major conclusions of the article)? It seems unfair to draw a conclusion that privates are over-represented at these professional schools when the admissions process is a lot more complicated than just GPA.

The author(s) also never seem to address typically smaller class sizes at privates resulting in a more personalized education. For example my private school experience as a freshman/sophomore gave me access to PhD's both in the classroom and the office. Those I went to high school with that went to a selective public school, as freshman/sophomore levels had a Masters Level grad student in both the classroom and recitation. In other words perhaps private school GPAs have inflated more because the quality of education has been maintained while public school quality has dropped with a focus on research and a lack of focus on teaching.

Additionally how has the increase in admissions selectivity contributed to increased GPA's? I admit you can't give all "A's" but if the average SAT score of students coming in has increased, it would be expected that the average GPA going out would be higher (assuming the education is equivalent over time).

Time itself is a contributor. The typical knowledge taught in HS today is higher than the typical knowledge taught in HS 30 years ago. Students are both better prepared and better focused by the time they get to college level.

Lastly there are the differing colleges and how those GPA's have inflated. Inflation in the social sciences is different than grade inflation in Engineering or other technical disciplines.

not so fast PIMA, I don't believe you have been officially relieved.
Thanks! I'm glad someone said it. Come on PIMA... popular demand is.... demanding!
X3
Seriously Pima? Too many people depend on your help/insight to allow one or two power mad "special" members to drive you away. Think of of all the new applicants and their families that don't have any insight into how the AF works. You wouldn't want them to blindly attempt to navigate the process with just OUR help. Have some compassion for them!:thumb:

Pima,

I really think that "AFROTC ICSP Statistics?-sircando" could really use your help. He seems earnest and in need of some guidance which you are uniquely qualified to offer.

The rest of us are uniquely unqualified in our own way.

I'm confused. Why are you out?

Just a guess, but I think this had something to do with it.

You mean to tell me that after all of the time you spend posting on this forum -not to mention being a resident of the state of Virginia -you don't know that VMI is a state college & has been a state college since 1839? It takes something away from your credibility in an argument when you are mistaken in something as basic as that.

Just for my own amusement and because I like beating dead horses, there are many many public schools with harder curriculums than private LA schools. Also, public schools have the advantage of having a broader major selection and in general more funding.

The only time I really recommend going to a private school is if you are interested in pre-professional programs such as medical or dental school where you can get one on one direction.

You forgot to include the Moderator's User ID with the statement.
