Qualified, awaiting appointment status

From the numbers I have seen, this year Admissions has been much pickier about the number of files they have qualified. If my memory serves me correctly, there were over 2500 qualified files last year but this year there are only ~1900. Last year Admissions offered ~1300 appointments, and around 1900 were accepted.

So in all, I believe the chances of qualified applicants being appointed increased this year since the pool is smaller. But someone please correct me if I am incorrect. I know that this year they were extremely aggressive about eliminating files they did not think were competitive.

I would agree, last year 2629 qualified, this year 1902. What no one knows is the competitive landscape, underrepresented pool composition, will the recent announcement allowing women into combat increase female appointments above the typical 15% etc. We will not learn the answers to these questions until the Class of 2017 Profile is published in August/September. The wait continues, finalize Plan B.

DS received a waiver for a medical DQ. He received notice of the waiver less than a week ago even though he had taken the dodmerb exam last summer. He hasn't received a rejection letter and had a competitive double nomination from his MOC (listed for two slots the MOC had available). We realize it's "late" but not sure if they hold slots for candidates that aren't medically qualified yet? Or maybe he'll just be on the waiting list? He has a brother at WP and it would be nice to have them both at the same school. He has a plan C but isn't very happy about the possibility he'll have to utilize it.

I don't believe they hold spots for candidates who aren't medically qualified past the April 15th medical qualification deadline. Let us know how everything turns out.

Btw, Admissions is still actively whittling down the qualified pool. My younger brother received a QNS letter today.

can anyone say weather or not their portal changed after receiving a QNS letter?

Okay, I just confirmed that the portal does not change whenever a QNS letter is issued.

So you're an applicant, your younger brother is an applicant, and you have a brother who graduated from West Point in 2012? Wow!

DS received a letter written 19 Feb saying he was qualified academically and in physical aptitude but his medical status was "undetermined at this time". On 9 Apr, he received a letter saying he was issued a waiver for his two disqualifying conditions.

He has received no other correspondence subsequent to that so I guess there is still a chance. My original question was, if they have someone they would select for an appointment but they aren't medically qualified (yet), do they hold that appointment awaiting the qualification or do they just hand them out to the 3 Qd individuals? Since he hasn't received the TWE, we're assuming he'll either get that or the BFE soon.

This waiting game is so difficult at this point as other deadlines to implement plan F and G are looming. One way or the other, we hope for some resolution. USCGA is also a potential but that is also awaiting a waiver.

In years past they had a deadline for achieving medical qualification. If a candidate received medical qualification by that deadline and they were the vacancy lead and were 2Q otherwise they had a good shot at winning the vacancy and receiving an offer of admission.

Still, the decision to request a waiver was probably made 60-90 days ago. They had to forecast the competitiveness of a candidate than. Just because they are waiting for the waiver evaluation to complete doesn't mean that there is a vacancy open for the candidate.

On the other had, if they knew your candidate had no shot, they would have probably stopped the waiver process and sent a TWE.

All this is speculation based on previous years admissions cycles. This years "no rolling admission" adds a layer of complexity and I am not sure how that affects the waiver evaluation requests. I understand about the waiting being difficult.

Has your DS sent an email to his regional admissions officer asking a similar question? Might help.

Good luck!

DS just got an email from USCGA medical review guy that he has been waivered for his two disqualifying issues. From my understanding, that will turn his "conditional appointment" into a full appointment. That moves him from plan G to plan C so he was a little lighter on his feet as he headed out the door to school two minutes ago. Still waiting for West Point mail of one sort or the other. This has been a long, tedious and stressful process for both him and his secretary. (me). We told him early on that he would be competing against the top tier nationwide in addition to those in his competitive state of Georgia. It hasn't crippled him because he just won first place in his region for the 1600 and 3200 meter races. When we get some resolution I will post it here and best wishes to all those others who are awaiting word.

Best wishes for your DS to get his plan A or B. My DS commented last night that out of the 30 or so candidates in his NASS company only 3 received USNA appointments and he is the only one to receive USMA appointment. All the rest have ROTC scholarships. He was surprised.

Yeah, my mother was none too happy to find out she would be giving ALL of her sons to the army. But with my younger brother's QNS, we will see if he continues to pursue it. With my brother deploying to Afghanistan in June, I think my mom was relieved that he was not appointed this year; she would have had a hard time watching us all leave for the military.

Well, went away for the day, came back and there was the BFE from West Point in the mailbox. DS hasn't even seen it yet. So now he has some options. Very exciting. Years of hard work paying off. No matter which branch he chooses, I'm sure he will make a fine officer.

Woohoo! I thought there might be one coming based on what you posted before. Congrats to your DS.

I was just wondering if there are any National Guard soldiers 3Q'd and nominated through a Commander's Endorsement who have been accepted? I have still received no information from West Point about my status. Also does anyone know if ARNG soldiers are even being accepted this year? Thanks!

From my understanding, most soldiers have heard by now. I'm not sure what the active duty to reserves statistical spread is though. If you have questions I would definitely contact your regional commander regarding your appointment status.

Thanks for the reply. I also thought that most soldiers had already been selected as well. That was until the ARNG liaison at USMA told me that he has been given no word on if or when ARNG soldiers will be selected. Thanks!

I have a friend in my old AIT unit who is NG and received his appointment in February. I have no idea if that's the norm, however.
