Just checked the DoDMERB website after weeks of trying to get qualified (I have mild scoliosis), and my statuses have changed to:

    Agency: ' US Army ROTC
    Admission Status: Offer Extended
    Admission Status Change Date: 4-JAN-2010
Current Medical Status: Qualified (as of 15-MAR-10 )

Agency: ' US Navy ROTC SubAgency: NURSE
    Admission Status: Accepted
    Admission Status Change Date: 29-JAN-2010
Current Medical Status: Qualified Unrestricted Line (as of 15-MAR-10 )

    I am so relieved!
Thanks to Mr Mullen, who helped me throughout the entire process!

Congrats alyak12! How long were you in the "que" after sending in your remedial?

Well, I knew before I started the process that my scoliosis would be a problem, so I contacted Mr Mullen and asked him what I should do. I sent in all of my medical history (regarding my scoliosis), and had new xrays done.

Unfortunately, when I received the xrays, the lumbar curve was at 25 degrees. (The military requires the lumbar curve to be under 20 degrees, and the thoracic curve to be under 30 degrees.)

This was a bit of a shock, because the last time I had my back checked, that curve was below 20 degrees, and the radiologist had said that since I was done growing, my spine wouldn't change any more. So I called the radiologist who had measured the curves, and asked him to check them again.

As it turns out, he had incorrectly measured them. My lumbar curve was at 19 degrees, and my thoracic curve was at 24 degrees, all within the DoDMERB limits. This was a huge relief, and I sent in all of the needed paperwork to Mr Mullen.

    This was in February.

By March 10, I had completed all of my medical exams, and DoDMERB was reviewing my files. On March 12 I checked my statuses and I was DQ'd for both the Army and Navy ROTC! I was VERY surprised. I emailed Mr Mullen about the disqualification, and he told me that I had been DQ'd because the lumbar curve in my back was at 25 degrees. I assumed he hadn't received the newly updated report on my back, so I told him that, sent him the most recent radiologist report, and he forwarded it to someone at DoDMERB.

Then this morning I received an email from DodMERB telling me that they had disqualified me because of the 25 degree curve in the lumbar area of my spine. Now I was confused. The Radiologist's report stated my curve at 19 degrees. So I called DoDMERB, and told them everything that had been going on.

As it turns out, DoDMERB hadn't read the second page of my radiologist report (which stated my curve as 19 degrees.) So they reviewed all of my case files again, and now I'm qualified!!

Congrats again alyak12 and thanks for the detailed answer. My daughter has been waiting since the middle of February for the letter from her dermatologist (administrative remedial) to work its way through the que at DoDMERB. Fortunately it seems yours went quicker than my daughters. :thumb:
    Congrats again!

    Great for you, congrats!!

I've found that Mr Mullen is ridiculously helpful. Last week, he offered to look into a remedial for me before I even asked....and it was good news. One more hurdle to clear for us, which we should find out this week. :thumb: I honestly don't know how one man can do so much. Some have referred to him as the 'Wizard of Oz'. I think he may be some type of Saint.

Yes, every time I've ever emailed him, Mr Mullen has responded within 24 hours! He must be getting hundreds of emails a day-I don't know how he does it. (But I'm glad he does! )

Good luck on your DoDMERB journeys! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys. :thumb:

My personal theory: Mr. Mullen is actually triplets.

Are we allowed to send him Christmas presents?

In response to my Saturday evening email, I got a phonecall at home 15 minutes later, and he worked out the best course of action while dealing with trick-or-treaters. Then he gave me a (good-natured) hard time for handling it instead of having my son the candidate do it.

Son's USMA waiver granted, appointment granted; USNA waiver in process.

My daughter hasn't had to work with Mr. Mullen, but I have to comment after watching so many posts: the DODMERB must be the most efficient, fair and effective departments in the government!!

I just wanted to echo the sentiments of several previous posters regarding the efficiency of the DoDMERB staff. My daughter received her letter from DodMERB today with a "Qualified" determination. She completed her Concorde / DodMets exams on March 9. DodMets completed their review of her file on March 11 and forwarded to DodMERB the same day. The DodMERB review was completed within 4 days as the determination letter is dated March 15. This is truly an example of a staff that takes these matters seriously and ensures that no unnecessary delays occur on their end.

Thank you, Mr Mullen and staff for the fine work that you do and for the extra effort that DoDMERB puts forward on behalf of each and every applicant.

FYI - some feedback re Concorde - we found everything to be arranged properly and were impressed with their involvement as well. The staff at both the physical, audiology and optometric exam sites were outstanding and thorough and appeared genuinely interested in doing things right.

    Thanks again.

This past Monday, my son become medically qualified for USCGA

Throughout these past 6 months, I knew that Mr. Mullen would be there to answer my hundreds of questions, reassure me, give me updates, and occassionaly remind me to exercise patience (something hard for an anxious mom)! But most of all, when the going got rough ,and when I felt like all the doors were being closed, he would remind me he was there helping out! And for that Mr. Mullen, I thank you!
