Does anyone know if I passed/failed the CFA (male)? Here are my scores:

    Basketball Throw: 50' 7"
    Pull Ups: 10
    Shuttle Run: 9.0
    Sit Ups: 95
    Push Ups: 71
    Mile Run: 7:05

    What do you guys think?

    You pass.

But I'll be VERY honest with you. Your BB Throw is VERY low. The other four events will "carry" you to the "eh, he's okay" level. However...if your toss was approximately 70' or so, then you'd have a FINE performance.

I'm not trying to get you down; you did "okay." But the toss was low.

What are all the events out of? He says 95 situps, is that out of 3 minutes or 1 or what? Same for the pushups and all the other categories as well.
    Thanks

Pull-ups, Push-ups, Sit-ups, have 2 minutes to complete as many as possible. The Mile is until completion.

I suppose that I'll be relying on my GPA/test scores, EC's, etc. then, correct?

They say that your academics have a major role, but don't just settle for those! Like people have said on the forums, do you want your appointment to be given to someone else because of a two foot difference on the CFA?

Have you been able to re-take it? Like flieger83 said, you've got good scores -- it's just that Basketball Throw.

I would definitely re-take it if you haven't submitted it yet, and see how you do. If you do decide to re-take it, here is some advice I found through these forums that increased my throw by a solid seven feet:

Twist your hips before you turn your shoulders, creating strain, and then follow through. Use your core more, and you'll see some improvments.

In my opinion, it's 70% strength, 30% techique. I threw 75 feet I believe (it's been a while), and that was an improvment from a steady 66 - 68 feet throw.

    Hope that helps!

nbbgolfcmdr, thanks but I've already submitted it, so I don't think that I could retake...hopefully my Academic part, my EC's, and my letters of recommendation make up for this "okay" score

    Btw, COULD I retake?

ONLY if USAFA asks you to retake it.

The BB throw is the strangest exercise I've ever done. I think mine was around 58'.

lol, same here. I think I was able to hit 60 after weeks of practice. I was above average or at the max on everything but that. Such an interesting test.

Try the hardest...practicing, haven't been able to make passing length yet, but have been able to improve or make passing scores on all the other events.

With regards to the Basketball throw. What is the time limit?

I believe the time limit for each event is two minutes except for the mile. However, you only get three throws. So, make them count. I was only able to get 54 ft. I think. I asked one of my good friend's father who was on the Coast Guard Academy Admission Board about the basketball throw and he told me that to this day he still doesn't understand the reasoning or the purpose behind that test. The Coast Guard Academy Board never really gave that test much weight. They primarly looked at the mile and the push-ups/pull-ups. Is the Air Force Academy the same in this respect?

The USAFA gives each event a "value" and assigns a certain number of points to each. I've been an ALO for 15 years now and I have NO idea what those points are and I can tell you that the USAFA won't tell me.

That being said, from my "experience" I will tell you, IMHO, the order of criticality of the test events would be:

    a. MILE
    b. pullups
    c. pushups
    d. situps
    e. BB Toss

Of course, THAT being said...a REALLY LOW throw...WILL impact negatively. How negatively I can't say. I had a young man recently send me his numbers...they were in the range of: 90+ pushups, 90+ situps, 5:45 mile, 18 pullups, 55' bb throw.

He was VERY concerned about his low distance toss. I told him: DO NOT WORRY!

Look at those other numbers: they're AWESOME! And THIS is where the ALO can step up and write a little "note" to USAFA clarifying this and letting them know that THIS is a REALLY FIT young man.

Thanks flieger83! I had 61 pushups, 95 (max) situps, 5:48 mile, 12 pullups, 54' bb throw. Should I worry or are these scores decent? (I know there is nothing I can do about it now; just wondering)

    I wouldn't worry.

Those numbers are very good. Yes, the BB toss is low...but I'd think they're fine. As always, you should speak with your ALO and go over this with him/her...

You can always ask your ALO: "Do you think this is okay or is it possible to request USAFA to re-look at this or ??"
