Question about appointments...

I have noticed on this board several who already have appointments.
How is that possible? I thought appointments - other than athletic - would occur in Feb-Mar?

My son has three nominations - from Georgia's two senators and a Presidential - but no LOA. He did not submit his application until 13 Nov, so we are anxious about an appointment.

Ways it could happen by now:

1) LOA plus a presidential nomination (many people had these in October)

2) Presidential nomination and the board found candidate qualified without even issuing an LOA originally

3) LOA and a MOC nomination (many states/reps have released their slates already)

4) Principal nomination from a MOC and the board found the candidate qualified

I'm sure there are IC appointments too, but I'm not an expert on how those work so I'll let someone else chime in!

Edited to add that the main reason most appointments aren't issued until March is that many MOC's use a competitive method of listing their nominations - they list the 10 names and let the academy decide. The academy can't do that until all 10 applications are in, gone before a board, and scored to determine who has the best score and will receive the appointment. Since applications aren't due to the academies until late Feb/March 1, if anyone on the slate isn't complete with theirs, the board can't compare them all until that point.

I am not sure if this is the right area to ask this question, but here goes...

What happens after LOA and nomination are received? How long after will son be notified of an appointment? In addition, there seems to be some sort of orientation that takes place in April. What is that and when?

Thanks to all for good wishes and great information. Good luck to everyone who continues to wait for nominations.

We're wondering/hoping the same thing! My son found out about his senator nom on Thursday and his congressman one yesterday and they were both updated on his online application status as of yesterday. But his overall status still shows just LOA (although the noms show). From what I've read here on the boards, at some point it will switch to "Appointment Offered". Then it seems like it takes a week or two to actually get it in the mail.

As far as the Orientation weekends - if you look at the AF website under regular candidate visits, it shows that they aren't available (these are the visits open to anyone - my son did one his junior year) for three Mon/Tue dates in April due to candidate orientation - those are April 12/13, 19/20, 26/27. My understanding is that most people arrive by Sun night, have a dinner or informal get together to meet other candidates that evening, then Monday morning there are briefings for everyone (candidates/parents) and then midday the candidates go off with a cadet for about the next 24 hours. I believe there are tours for parents that afternoon. By Tuesday afternoon, everyone is done. I haven't found anyone on the boards yet here with the official information about this year's though.

we got our official letter of appointment a little over three weeks after the comittee met. nomination was recieved about a week earlier than when the comittee met
