Question about NROTC school choices.

Does anyone know what schools are most popular for NROTC scholarships (ie, fill up the quickest)? Out of the schools I applied to (Georgetown, Miami U of Ohio, Cal Maritime, Northwestern, U of Tampa - in that order)), are any of them high on the list of "desired" NROTC schools?

I've seen the question asked a number of times about whether an applicant should advise the NROTC (before they've been awarded a scholarship) that they have been accepted by one of their colleges. Does the selection committee care (before awarding a scholarship) whether an applicant has already been accepted into any/all of his colleges or is it just a waste of an email to advise you?

It does help. As you get accepted, I suggest rearranging your school choices and when requesting a school change, ask that they put that in the notes, if accepted to a school or not. Because all notes and changes are checked prior to placement.

Georgetown which is a crosstown of George Washington does fill up rather quickly. San Diego, Texas A&M, Penn State, Vanderbilt, George Washington, Embry-Riddle, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Military Institute fill up the quickest. With Embry-Riddle, Texas A&M, and Penn State filling up first.

In my case, I put down 5 schools because I had to. I would only accept a scholarship if it was for my 1st choice school. If not, it's gonna be student loans and hoping for a lot of outside scholarships. Luckily, I received a Corps Of Cadets scholarship at Texas A&M that qualifies me for in state tuition. My parents are going to help out as much as they can. But they know that they can't cover all of the costs. Their unit fills up really fast too, so its a bummer I didn't get a scholarships at the first board.

There's still hope for the 2nd board though...

Are you a Marine Option, if you are in the top selects of the Marine selects there is a strong possibility of being placed at Texas A&M, it depends where you are on the list if you are selected.

Yes I am a Marine Option. Thank you, that is encouraging. The best part of the whole situation is that I know I'll be in NROTC in the fall with or without a scholarship. That is the beauty of the college program.

So if I've been accepted at Miami, and told NROTC that I was accepted in the same email I sent them with my college order change, does that give me a good chance of getting a scholarship? If it helps, the sent my an early acceptance letter around two weeks after I applied, stating in the letter that I was a great applicant and they were very excited to potentially have me at their school. Maybe it means that I am one of the top contenders for a scholarship at Miami?

As I read some of these comments and questions - many similiar to years past. I can only speak to NROTC- they ask for 5 schools YOU WOULD ATTEND - if you cant live with the 5 - find 5 or DONT APPLY. I do not mean to sound harsh, on the other hand - this is the Navy looking to invest in the candidate, but for their purposes. The scholarship is nice, but the candidate EARNS it, every penny! If a candidate has a goal to become a Naval or Marine officer, can't find 5 schools to commit to, then perhaps they should rethink their path to commission. There are other ways to gain a commission than the scholarship route.
I am amazed when I have read in past years' candidates or parents come on and say their candidate received a scholarship to a school THEY DIDNT APPLY TO OR DOESNT WANT TO ATTEND! On the application it CLEARLY states for you to commit to naming and APPLYING to those 5 schools - where is the HONOR or INTERGITY if the candidate doesnt stand by his/her word?
IT is another thing to NOT get in to a school - one gives their word and then they live by their word.
Good luck to all, larrys mom

It does not help or hurt your chances, they will not necessarily include this in your package. It will just be in the selection notes that are checked prior to placement, but you have to ensure you request it be put in the notes. It really does help when placing kids if they have been on top of changing their schools around based on acceptance. I don't want to place someone at a school they have not been accepted to, where they could essentially lose their scholarship. But if you do get placed at a school where you are not accepted, you can request to put your name on up to three waitlists. Waitlists and transfers are not looked at until all boards are placed. Once waitlists are being worked, and you become inpatient because there is no movement on the waitlist at your requested unit, what is great, you can request a list of open units with admission dates from the placement office, and the NROTC units at the open schools are normally great about assisting kids in a speady application process. (This of course is once you are selected).

Don't read too much into being accepted at out of State schools. They love the extra revenue for out of State students and generally send acceptance letters pretty quickly. Same goes for many private colleges. My son applied to two out of State schools and they sent acceptance letters within a week of completing the online application.

Miami Ohio accept 79% of all applicants and the acceptance rate for out of State applicants will be much higher.

And Miami Ohio offers one of the best 4 yr educations you can get anywhere:thumb: LINK w/excellent Navy ROTC
(I live close by) My DS 1st choice but no Army ROTC:frown:

I see your point to a degree, but my DS for example wants VMI or Norwich...has been accepted at both./.has a decent academic scholarship to Norwich, but not nearly what ROTC is.. Those schools REALLY impress him above the others...Im not saying that the other schools aren't great, but college choice is a big deal...it will go with him the rest of his life. What if he gets injured or sick and cant fulfill a 5 year military commitment? It happens. Been through it. Those are his 2 choices of what he thinks will prepare him the best to serve as an officer and being an Engineer which he is planning on doing regardless of scholarship $$ from NROTC or AROTC...He wants the military discipline and the small school atmosphere. He is inclined to feel more confident with a 15:1 ratio and both have excellent EC programs..His intentions are to serve and make the sacrifice, but not willing to be flexible on his school preferences is smart if he REALLY wants to go there..Lets face it the SMC's are tough enough that you have to be really dedicated to the schools, which he would be....therefore when my son says I don't want Penn State or Citadel or whatever other school..I understand . Just the academia required to complete a BS in ECE is something he is going to have to be dedicated to. If the Navy says no money..then he took a shot, and I will get 3 more jobs... but to say he shouldn't even apply for a scholarship even though he is qualified ..not quite with you there..Also as far as the integrity part that you mentioned...when they asked the question on the Application how important his 1st choice school was to him...he explained his position very clearly so as to not deceive

That is a ranking for undergraduate teaching, not the college ranking.
Miami Ohio is ranked 79th in the nation:

Correct, college rankings include lots of things like "average alumni giving rate" and "faculty compensation"...

"best 4 yr educations" = best teaching of undergraduates.
(First-year retention rate 90.0%, Four-year graduation rate 68.1%, Six-year graduation rate 80.7%)

People get too wrapped up in college rankings, and degrees in general. In ten years time no one will care about your degree or college you got it from. Unless you are going to a top school and have a specific career in mind it makes little difference in the long run.

Spending ten years as a military officer trumps most degrees. My previous company had 5 ex-officers on the ten person executive team.

I already sent NROTC an email letting them know I was changing the order of my college list... but all I did was ask for the change and let them know I was accepted, I didn't ask for a specific note to be placed in my file with the change. Do they not change your school order if you don't ask for it to be put on file? I don't know if they will ever respond, but if they do, should I send a response saying that I want a note to be put in my file about being accepted at Miami?

NROTC Nurse Option

My DD has applied for an NROTC Nurse Option scholarship and has as her first choice a detachment who has a cross town affiliate state university with RN program. When she interviewed with the officer at the detachment, he told her that they have not had a nurse midshipman for several years and would like to have one. My question is for anyone who would have some insight into this: are there a certain number of slots reserved for nurse option midshipman in a detachment? and will the fact that this detachment has not had many nurse midshipman in the last few years help her chances of getting a slot in this NROTC detachment? She has strong stats and is looking good for admission to a very competitive state university nursing program and it is her number one choice. Thanks.

Would appreciate some feed back. My son sent his NROTC application in, had an excellent interview as well. He is also applying to the USNA and the USAFA. He has very high stats. We live in Iowa. Has had a passion for a life long career in the military. His choices for colleges for AE (he doesn't want any other engineering choices as they are not his passion):

1. Purdue
2. U of IL
3. Iowa State
4. University of Michigan
5. Stanford

We applied early, he received notice yesterday that his dream college Purdue accepted him but not into the school of engineering, they were too critically full for that major. He was offered guarantee admissions to other major choices that honestly were pretty lame and nothing remotely close to anything he has a desire for. Purdue was his goal since he was a 6 yr old kid.

So now what do we do? Contact ROTC and let them know, add another ROTC college and re arrange the order of choice colleges? Deadline is in January correct for any changes? He was told they would most likely offer him his home state Iowa or IL since his dad lives there are we are divorced and that would qualify as an in state but honestly he really doesn't want to attend Iowa State at all and wasn't too sold on U of IL. The NROTC interviewer said he had a stellar application and would push for his first choice-Purdue. we thought we had this in the bag. We are now looking to add one of these colleges for AE, Texas A&M, University of Colorado or Embry Riddle. I am just amazed that even with early decision the college of engineering at Purdue was full, he didn't even get the Freshman Year Program as an offer either. Heart breaking.

Any ideas to share on how to switch his line up and what is acceptable?

I appreciate your help.

We feel your pain Flying 8764! My son just received the denied with alternative major from Purdue as well. My son was just there this week with the minority engineering program, which Purdue invited him to attend and paid for him to come to. Then on the drive home we received the status. We were shocked my son has really high stats and a urm, does Purdue not wait list?
