Question about NROTC school choices.

Would appreciate some feed back. My son sent his NROTC application in, had an excellent interview as well. He is also applying to the USNA and the USAFA. He has very high stats. We live in Iowa. Has had a passion for a life long career in the military. His choices for colleges for AE (he doesn't want any other engineering choices as they are not his passion):

1. Purdue
2. U of IL
3. Iowa State
4. University of Michigan
5. Stanford

We applied early, he received notice yesterday that his dream college Purdue accepted him but not into the school of engineering, they were too critically full for that major. He was offered guarantee admissions to other major choices that honestly were pretty lame and nothing remotely close to anything he has a desire for. Purdue was his goal since he was a 6 yr old kid.

So now what do we do? Contact ROTC and let them know, add another ROTC college and re arrange the order of choice colleges? Deadline is in January correct for any changes? He was told they would most likely offer him his home state Iowa or IL since his dad lives there are we are divorced and that would qualify as an in state but honestly he really doesn't want to attend Iowa State at all and wasn't too sold on U of IL. The NROTC interviewer said he had a stellar application and would push for his first choice-Purdue. we thought we had this in the bag. We are now looking to add one of these colleges for AE, Texas A&M, University of Colorado or Embry Riddle. I am just amazed that even with early decision the college of engineering at Purdue was full, he didn't even get the Freshman Year Program as an offer either. Heart breaking.

Any ideas to share on how to switch his line up and what is acceptable?

I appreciate your help.
We feel your pain Flying 8764! My son just received the denied with alternative major from Purdue as well. My son was just there this week with the minority engineering program, which Purdue invited him to attend and paid for him to come to. Then on the drive home we received the status. We were shocked my son has really high stats and a urm, does Purdue not wait list?

Did he get a choice to chose another alternative major from their list? It should be a link within the letter. My son did but he is not interested in any of them and needs to stay with engineering to get his ROTC scholarship should they offer him one. He didn't even get the FYE, Freshman Year Engineering. I was honestly shocked and had to re read this letter like 4 times. I didn't understand it. Aerospace engineering is his passion. Purdue was all he wanted since he was 6, he has been flying since he was 16. God has a plan and Purdue isn't it. I honestly dont understand how this college can be so full already with early selections! We are also juggling the academies, its going to be a LONG winter. LOL

Yes, he did get the alternative majors and pretty much everything was there besides engineering. He is only interested in chemical engineering, so none of those majors interested him either. Yes we are juggling the academies as well, so I understand the frustration. We were taken a back when he didn't get in, since he just attended an event they paid for him to come to we kind of figured he was in. My DS college list is the same as your son's only his top choice is U of I, then Michigan. He's been admitted into both Iowa's and Michigan State thus far.

We are waiting for Michigans reply and University of IL. IL has a wait list and Michigan I have no idea and am scared to find out. I can't get over how many schools are full already and know tons of kids who haven't even applied yet to colleges. What do they do?! We have to change s selections and notify ROTC. I can't get over that happened to your son with Purdue. Did he get CE at Michigan? When did he find out? Thanks

All the colleges you picked are top flight. None of them are really safety schools. I expect that has something to do with their engineering programs filling up early but I'm really just guessing. Once he's in the military they won't care where he went to college. Can't say that's true after, but they're probably more interested in his military career and leadership afterwards anyway. If he's not interested in attending Iowa or IL and they both can be considered in-state, why are they both on the list? There is no point listing some school you really don't want to attend. Don't mean to be harsh, but is he more interested in the college or the military? There are lots of good engineering schools out there that don't have the prestigious names you listed where I'm sure he could get in their engineering program. Why not find one he can be happy at and apply there, replacing either Iowa or IL? Just my 2 cents and you can't by a thing with that anymore.

In order to be considered they require an instate school in the top 3 of your 5 choices, they even told him this during his NROTC interview. Iowa State and University of IL fall into both as I am divorced and his dad lives in IL but Purdue was #1. He is more concerned with AE than flying while in college although he will continue with his lessons and has his PP and is trying to secure a pilot slot after college. Not giving up, ISU is a last resort but still a great option, he understands that but wants more if he can get more and wants to try.

Wouldn't Purdue engineering only be filled up for early decision? Can you put your application back into the pool of regular admission. They have to have slots still open for regular admissions deadline.

Your best bet for an answer to that is to call Purdue Admissions.

I have an update. My son asked for reconsideration to Purdue and asked what his weak points were. His ACT scores needed to be higher and he recently just re took those and did receive a better score but not mind blowing. The other was even tho he has had over 6 AP classes and achieved all A;s in them and maintains a 3.98 GPA they stated all FYE Purdue freshman who where admitted all were taking AP Chem or AP Physics(he already took this his junior year) their senior year. He has already had 4 years of science but added this anyway as it was an easy fix. Today he found out that he was accepted to FYE at Purdue! He is so happy! Keep the faith!

flying8764,

Congrats!

I am just going to take this offtrack for a second, but it is still on track.

This is what many, including myself, refer to when we say you can tell us a certain cgpa, or X amount of AP, but it doesn't help in chancing. Colleges admissions are looking at specific things in that transcript, just like ROTC scholarship. In his case, they wanted those APs in Chem and Physics for admission.

Now add that into the ROTC scholarship aspect from a match perspective. If you do not stay on top of this, than your chances of fixing it greatly decreases. It is juggling/fighting/investigating both sides of the fence at the same time.
~ Common app is great in a way, but also horrible. As a parent going through this process 3x, I was floored when I joined collegeconfidential.com and read many kids were applying to 6,8,10 colleges. In my day, we applied to 5 at tops. That was back when we used typewriters! It is horrible because for ROTC candidates, especially if they are SA applicants it is just to hard to keep track/juggle impo. They are in sports/job/community service, taking a rigorous course load, doing college tours, interviewing (SA/MOC/ROTC CoC), SAT/ACT, DoDMERB exam, etc., and add on top that contacting any of them directly can only happen while they are in school makes it an uphill battle.
~~ just saying don't bite off more than you can chew. Be realistic.

My best wishes, hopes and thoughts to him and your family for wanting to defend this great nation.
