My DS's ACT scores are not that great - 25. He is retaking in Sept. My question is when he applies to CGA in November if they don't think he is ready, do they automatically consider him for the Prep School or does he have to ask to be considered for Prep?

They will automatically consider him for a Scholars appointment.

I would definitely still mention in the "Extra" essay section, that a scholars appointment would gladly be accepted if tendered: many people would turn it down, i'm sure it's nice for admissions to know you've explored all the options and are fully committed to the Coast Guard.

I would also recommend not trying for an Early Action slot. This will give him time to improve his ACT/SAT as well as the opportunity to take any and all Fall ACT/SAT. Aim to have the application package done by 1 Feb 2014.

SAT and ACT

You mentioned only the ACT. I would definitely recommend taking the SAT in addition to the ACT. The two tests have different approaches and often times a student who doesn't do well on one may do well on the other. Have you looked at prep courses? Some can get very expensive but there are cheaper alternatives (online courses, study books, etc.). Other threads have discussed that......I'm sure with a quick search of the forum you'll find some advice. Lastly, if possible take both tests multiple times. Good luck!!
