Hello, my son was contracted with AROTC at the end of the last spring semester. He also is in National Guard and is in SMP so he gets his monthly Drill Pay and GI Bill TA. He is a junior this semester. My question is when is the ROTC pay sent out each month? Would it be added to his other military pay or will it show up as a different deposit? Also, does it come monthly? I am assuming there is no ROTC pay during the summer when he is not in school. I am new to this and am just trying to learn about the pay so I can stay on top of his tuition bills etc. Thanks.

It comes on the 1st and 15th each month (of the months it is paid out), +/- a day or so depending. Mine usually would come at 12:01 on the 1st and 15th, or within a day or so as sometimes if the 1st or 15th was a weekend, sometimes it would come on that Friday. Since I am not Guard, I am not 100% certain on if the stipend will come with the drill pay, but I believe they are separate as they are coming from different pots of money. It could turn out that it is all lumped together through one DFAS payment. The HRA at his school will probably be the best source of info on that.

As far as it being paid during the summer months, many people have experienced different things so we may tell you one thing and you could see 2 or 3 other things. I was given a memo and briefing at Knox this summer regarding the pay and my experience has matched what the memo said. According to it, cadets do not draw stipends during the summer except if they are MS3's or MS4's, and cannot draw both stipend and summer training pay at the same time. The reason being 3's and 4's are paid is due to system requirements, apparently once they are in the system as 3's and 4's, they are paid year round, however after they attend summer training and receive that pay they will see the stipend for those training days taken back or they just might not see the stipend covering the days they were receiving training pay. Since your son is guard, there also was a bullet point that cadets also cannot receive cadet base pay (the summer training pay) and drill pay/active duty for training pay through their Guard/Reserve unit at the same time, in some instances. I do not know the details on that part as I've never had to deal with guard pay.

On paper, this is how cadet command pictures it to work. Sometimes it works just like this, and sometimes you'll see random payments on random days and random subtractions during the summer for random amounts. From reading from different parents on the board, they have seen odd things as well.

In addition it can vary from school to school based on how the HRA manages all of the paperwork and what not, especially when you start completing travel vouchers, CLIP bonuses, etc.

Bull is spot on

The poster Bull is spot on. You will eventually get all your pay but ROTC pay at times is spotty especially in the non-stipend category because of the efficiency of the various human resource assistants who process the paperwork.

Thanks

You were right. It is split into 2 payments. One on the 1st and the other on the 15th!
