Hi everyone.

We just received word that one of the candidates, from our state, was taken to the hospital (North Shore Medical Center) and is still there. The mom is frantic and has not been able to find out anything. Is there any information anyone can share that might be helpful for her in getting some info?

Just thought I'd ask...........

Sometimes injuries happen when Patten Health Clinic is closed -- like in the evenings. Nothing extremely serious, but it demands immediate attention.

The people at North Shore Hospital are used to midshipmen coming in for all manner of things -- and are really good at handling them.

In addition to the DIs and OICs that run indoc -- there are also Midshipmen EMTs who are on call 24/7 and are pretty great people all around. They're dedicated to their jobs, and enjoy being nice to candidates -- because the DIs and OICs aren't allowed to be nice.

Sometimes candidates are kept in the hospital overnight because they can't rest in a stressful atmosphere like indoc, so they're sent back during the next day.

Remember, that if your child is 18 or older the hospital cannot release any health information about them to the parents without their written consent which is usually easier said than done.

North shore is a top notch facility. He's in good hands and the Jamz has put it correctly above.

The parents were contacted by a representative of KP with the basic information. The candidate was taken there (NSMC) yesterday. The parents have been trying to get some specific info, but the facility has not been forthcoming.

KP2001 hit the nail on the head. With HIPPA and all the other privacy laws, it might be a little bit of a challenge to get some info, but the candidate is in good hands........ I keep hearing the words of the Admiral Worley from last Thursday; ".....we will be taking good care of your candidate" I believe that is true. However, we all know unexpected things happen. (one young lady had to loaded on a stretcher and taken away at the conclusion of the lunch formation on Thursday......we were right by where she fell out.....looked like a combination of locking knees too long and maybe a little dehyration?)

I am keeping a good thought for the young man and his family.

easier said than done, but try not to freak out. unfortunately the nature of the beast is that no news is good news. as jamz said, the EMT squad at school is committed to taking the best care of all members of the regiment as is possible. if they've not told you something bad, that means it's being resolved.

unfortunately, this is the first of many opportunities for parents to see that they're not making the decisions for their kids anymore. an overnight stay at North Shore LIJ is common practice in situations such as this, where the kid needs to relax for various reasons.
it'll be ok, LIJ and the USMMA EMS squad are totally committed to doing it right.

Don't freak out! I can assure you that if it is anything serious you will be getting a call from Capt. Fell. He is on top of what is going on with all the kids. My son was sent to the ER last tri with a bruised kidney (from his Plebes roughing him up in the Mud pit at recognition), and Capt. Fell was in contact with him during the whole ordeal. As is2day said, no news is good news!!!

I rememebr the Admiral saying that they are "adult children" so I will live with the mantra "no news is good news" and think only positive thoughts

My son hurt his shoulder and had to have surgery a couple of years ago and they were great communicating with us.

My son is also a Plebe Candidate and I work for the Health System. He is in good hand but if you are having trouble getting in touch with him you can call me at 718-413-1626 and I can facilitate.

Any word on how the PC is that was taken to hospital?

parents have talked with him.....looks like he has his cell phone with him.....he went in (hospital) Friday then back out. Back again Saturday and was still in this morning ........not sure what the issue is/was.

Wonder how many days of a 17 day INDOC can be missed due to injury/illness? Like most things it is probably a case by case situation.
