Hey guys, I was wondering what an appointment is. If you get one, does that mean you are in, or does that mean you have an interview?

Also, if you are nominated, and receive a "Principal Nomination" (or something like that) do you get an appointment automatically?

An appointment is the same thing as an offer of admissions meaning you are accepted.

If you have a principal nomination and are found fully qualified by admissions, you receive an appointment.

So if you congressional gives you a "Principle Nomination" you arent guaranteed an appoitment right? You first have to be aprooved by admissions first correct? So If an appointment means you are accepted, is there an interview after you are appointed?

    you aren't guaranteed an appointment.
there's no interview after appointment, but you still have to maintain academic and medical qualification. "don’t get arrested, don’t get suspended, don’t participate in sports hazing, don’t post questionable things/pictures on Facebook, etc, etc, etc."

If you are a principal nominee you will receive an appointment BUT only if you are fully qualified. Even then, ALL appointments can be taken back if you get in trouble or lower your grades.

Admissions only releases the max for each event.

You will find out if you pass because they will tell you if you failed or are physically qualified.

You will know about your appointment by getting a letter from admissions or getting a call from your MOC congratulating you. You could also "know" an appointment is on the way if your portal says you are fully qualified and have a principal nomination or if you have a LOA and meet all the requirements listed on it.

MOC = Member of Congress (I think)

MOC = Member Of Congress. That would be a U.S. Senator or a U.S. Congressman. And to clarify LOA = Letter of Assurance which is sent to a candidate the academy strongly desires. It's similar to an early admissions offer from a civilian college. This year the last LOA's went out in November. Most candidates will now sometime in April if they've been offered an appointment to West Point. But as West Point works to bring the class up to size some folks will hear very late in the game. This is much more the exception. My wife's (class of '88) roommate got her appointment a week prior to R-day! Now this year (class of '14) is probably going to be different. A higher than usual number of candidates are accepting their offers of appointment so there will likely be fewer folks getting in at the last minute. Good questions!

Page 1 of the CFA instructions lists the average and max scores for each event. As AF indicated, the minimum or passing scores are not published.

You should strive to do your best - practice the events until you meet or, even better, beat the average score. Always try to do your best.

My son practiced quite a bit, and only took the official test when he was sure he could beat the average scores. In a few of the events, he did achieve the max after some practice. For him, the toughest event was the pull-ups. I installed a pull-up bar in his bedroom doorway for him to practice everyday when he entered or exited his room.

As has been written in earlier posts, in rare cases the admissions office will advise an applicant if they are too low in a particular event, providing an opportunity for a retest.

In any case, always do your best - you are competing with others for the available appointments. The CFA results are only part of the whole candidate score.

Szpieg, here is a link to one of the admissions pages that has great information on the "steps" to take to apply to West Point. Included is a link that will show the maximum for the CFA.

    http://admissions.usma.edu/prospectus/step_home.cfm

Great site to spend some time on...

I don't think the CFA is a pass-fail thing. It's just another criteria in which having a good score makes you more competitive than somebody with a lower score.

West Point will notify you if you get appointed or not.

There are minimum requirements for each event as well as an overall passing score.
If you fail just one event, you fail the CFA - even if you maxed the other five.
Your Regional Commander can ask for a retest.

Simply put: Failing the CFA = No appointment.
