I read somewhere that there were 19-20,000 candidates for the class of 2018. Out of those candidates, how many were qualified in Academics, Medical and Fitness?

I appreciate the wealth of infomation and support on this forum, thanks to everyone who posts, I have learned so much.

There were not quite 18,000. Still a large number but from what I've heard only about 4,000 of each applicant pool are triple qualified and less than half of that are offered appointments.

From the online viewbook (http://www.usna.edu/Viewbook/admissions.php)

"If you are found qualified but do not receive a Letter of Assurance, you will be competing for an offer of appointment from within your nominating sources. Approximately 2,000 candidates are found fully qualified (scholastically, medically, physically (CFA), and have obtained a nomination). Of that number, about 1,500 will receive appointments and approximately 1,200 become midshipmen."

I don't have the exact number, but I think something like 4,500 are scholastically, medically and physically qualified (or 3Qd). 2,000 of those obtain a nomination (4Qd).
