Just today, I received a letter from my congresswoman, stating that I had received a nomination to USNA. In November, I received a letter from USNA saying "The admissions board has found you qualified to compete for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy with the class of 2015. You are guaranteed an offer of appointment if your remaining admissions requirements are satisfactorily met."

Then the Nominations box was ticked off. Is this letter simply stating that I will be eligible to compete after I receive a nomination? What does it mean by "guaranteed an offer of appointment?"

It means that in November you received what is called an LOA, Letter Of Assurance. So... you have probably been doing some unnecessary stressing :yllol: by receiving the nomination you will officially be offered an appointment to the naval academy. In other words, welcome to the class of 2015 Kristina.

You should receive the official offer from USNA (your BFE, Big Fat Envelope) in the mail within the next few days.

Congrats! & and see ya on I-Day :thumb:

    GO NAVY!!!

You got an LOA, if all you needed was the nom then you can sit back and wait for the good news:thumb:.

Huh??! Wouldn't an LOA say something like "Letter of Assurance" in the letter? Plus, my test scores and GPA are nowhere near perfect!

well it kinda does say it....indirectly of course. It does say you are guaranteed an offer of appointment etc. etc. It is a part of the USNA mind game. They like to keep you guessing.

and as far as test scores and GPA, USNA is looking for someone with the whole package. People with 2300 SAT scores and the incapability to do a push-up can go find a spot at MIT. Also leadership plays a huge role in the admissions process, more than people think for sure.

Wow! I am not kidding when I say my stats are nowhere near perfect though. I am kind of in shock right now. I can't believe that I was so close to not even applying a year ago, because I kept thinking it was a long shot!

I'll tell anyone who is reading this to NEVER let that kind of mind set stop you from taking these kinds of chances!!

Thank you guys, I'm absolutely looking forward to joining USNA CLASS OF 2015!!!!

    GO NAVY!! :D

edit- my bgo confirmed that I had received an LOA:) I can't believe I held on to the letter for two months, not knowing what it was

Kris, you can't win it if you're not in it! (that will be you're new mantra) Now for your next freak-out, stay healthy, run some, keep out of trouble, and when you show up for I-day, give it all you got! Oh, and run some.

Your story sounds a lot like my DS's. He threw his name in the hat and worked hard to see it through. Now he's doing his first year at NAPS. He will be part of the Class of 2015 with you.

The Navy is not looking for perfect people, just good people with good moral character that can lead others to victory in stressful situations. You must be one of them! No pressure though.

    CONGRATULATIONS! :thumb:

All my best for your success.

Congrats from SC! Well deserved I'm sure. Tell your parents to book their I- day and PPW hotel rooms today. Order USNA gear from the navy sports online store and wear it proudly!

    Congratulations. :thumb:

    Get the bubble wrap out...

All your worries have just jumped from you to your parents. I know I was petrified every time DD came to bat her senior softball season. I was secretly hoping she would strike out each time so she wouldn't have to run the bases and reinjure her leg. She didn't of course and is now deep into the dark ages - doing great.

PS: Don't do anything silly. All your friends will be celebrating their acceptances to other great schools - schools that for the most part could care less about a little thing like underage drinking or other teenage shenanigans. Your school is not one of them!

As has been mentioned, the Navy is looking for way more than a person with excellent test scores. Leadership, determination, physical fitness/stamina, willingness to serve others...and a lot of chutzpah are just as important.

And, don't count on that 2300 getting you into MIT. Stepson got a perfect score on SATs and still didn't get into MIT. They were also looking for someone more well rounded! And, btw, even though he has now graduated from college with a triple major in aerospace engineering, math and physics, he told his younger brother that he is jealous of his academy appointment because he could NEVER have done it!

Congrats OP, and all the other appointees to the Class of 2015! There are some current Plebes that will be REALLY glad to see you in a few months! :yllol:

Joy, joy, joy! To be surpassed only when the BFE's in your hands! Enjoy, celebrate, savor ...for there are few finer moments in life. And when one realizes THE monster hurdle, among many yet to come, is getting that appointment. No call for cruise control, lots of hard work ahead, but one of THE major diffs between this appointment and matriculation to many secular institutions ...the entire drive from day #1 is to KEEP YOU THERE vs. push you out. Way too much money, time, resource devoted to screening the best from the better to want to reverse that process. And the stats are conclusive ...85 of every 100 who show up @ I Day, will be there on graduation/commissioning day. And only 4 years hence.

While MIT and other elite, highly selective institutes, colleges, and universities are nothing to sneeze at, indeed, terrific accomplishments ...there is NO COMPARISON between the experiences beyond the diploma @ day's end. While impossible to give any real meat to that bone, at least in advance, looking back, it will become crystal-clear to careful observers. And it's about the educational/learning/opportunities, etc. way more than just the military thing.

Congrats and go for it! Let the ride begin.

    LOA and Nomination

My daughter has received her USNA LOA and the only item checked was her nomination. She received her nomination two days before Christmas. This was indeed the best Christmas for the entire family. We thank GOD for this and for my daughter's hard work.

Truly, one of the best Christmas gifts possible for ones on this path.

Congrats and may He continue to bless yours w/ grace, mercy, and enabling her best.

Just for the record I hope everyone realizes I did not intend to put down MIT. I was merely trying to make the point that in order to get into the academy a candidate must have the entire package and not just grades.

Remember that wonderful feeling 4 years ago when my daugher got the appointment letter. Your parents have got to be very proud of you!

Enjoy the ride... It can be a roller coaster with bumps along the way.

:rolleyes:Stats are not everything. Relying on them is why OP thought she was a long-shot. Leadership, communication ability and plain-old gumption make a difference. Do your best to see that they are displayed in your application.

I completely understand. The reason I ask is because I'm 3q'd with a nomination. I just want to get an idea of what the Academy considers LOA-worthy. It's just a way for me to kill time and get through the waiting process.
