Questions about CGAS

In regards to my DD, does she just email that she wants the slot and will we get something in the mail as well? Got the letter on her Bear's Den page on the 3rd, but haven't received anything in the mail yet.

Also the paperwork that's to be downloaded that in the link, do we need to start filling all of it out now and is this different from the paperwork to be filled out at orientation next summer at the Academy? Some of it asks for info that she doesn't have yet like Unit No. which seems like she wouldn't know that until next summer at orientation.

Will she be assigned to the prep school with her sport? She's being recruited for XC, but of the two preps, only GMC has a team. Will the coach stay in contact with her and/or the coach at prep school to monitor her progress or will she need to keep CGA's XC coach updated?

And, finally, if she accepts the prep and gets an appt at another academy or a full ride at a civilian school after she accepts, will she be able to withdraw or is it a done deal once she accepts?

Sorry for all the questions, but want to make sure we don't overlook anything:redface:

Hi runninggirlmom, I have also received an appointment to CGAS so I will be able to answer some of your questions. You have until April to accept the appointment, however the Coast Guard is asking that you email them within 30 days to let them know if you are at all interested in the appointment. I've just asked them to please hold my spot. Accepting late or early does not affect your appointment. So concerning the other Academies you have until April, after their decisions have been released.

Wonderful news! On the letter it said 30 days, and she kind of felt under the gun to make a decision. I'll pass this on to her, although I think she has an email in to her LOA as well on the subject. Thanks again.

Congratulations to both of you. CGAS is a wonderful opportunity to prepare for the academy. Students who do CGAS are better prepared for swab summer, and do tend to have a smoother transition during their 4/c year.

There are two sets of paperwork that need to be filled out. The forms you are receiving from the academy are for their purposes, but you also have to send original documentation (transcripts, shot records, SAT/ACT, etc.) to the prep school. Each prep school is a stand-alone entity, and is not a DoD/DHS school. However, both schools are regionally accredited.

CGAS is an academic program, so while athletic interest is taken into account, school assignments will not be based on which prep school has which program. In my time here at Marion I see that most students actually choose not to participate in varsity sports in order to concentrate on their academic performance.

You can go ahead and accept the CGAS slot now if you like. If you get selected for another academy and you want to give up the slot, just notify CGA. They will then go to the CGAS wait list and offer the spot to another student.

Please do not start the application process to the prep school until you get the assignment from CGA. That should happen some time around April of 2015 as the CGAS class gets rounded out during RA. However, if you have the time and are able to, I do recommend doing campus visits at both MMI and GMC. Just contact the admissions offices at each campus to arrange an appointment. The web sites are http://www.gmc.cc.ga.us/ for GMC and http://www.marionmilitary.edu for MMI.

Again, congratulations, and we're looking forward to seeing you.

MMI Flight Training?

Thank you for all the information Physicsguru! Do you have any experience with the Flight Training at MMI?

Just what the background information is.

The flight school is an after hours program with a private contractor. Students do ground school on campus in the evening, and do the in-flight instruction on the weekends. They also have afternoon flight sessions when the weather permits and the flight instructor is available (he's usually very available if the student arranges. He's a retired Marine officer living locally.) Students can usually solo within one semester. For the private license it usually takes a few months more to get the flight hours and required evolutions.

Flight school costs are *not* part of the tuition. Students have to pay out of pocket for flight school.

Students can still participate in the flight club, called the Flying Tigers, without taking flying lessons. I'm afraid I don't have much information on the Flying Tigers except that they do sponsor a fly-in during the spring semester at the local airfield.

One last item. The school does own an airplane, given by a local donor.

Hope this helps out.

Thanks for the info, Physicsguru. Very helpful. Glad to know we're not the only ones with these questions. She sent an email to Lt. Herold last night, so that's taken care of. Will be on lookout for BFE:biggrin:

DS recieved notification last night of CGAS selection. He was on the waitlist. Of course he accepted. Currently waiting on input from CGA Swim Coach which of the two programs he prefers. We are leaning towards Marion. Lots of paperwork to fill out. If you have someone going the CGAS this fall, please send a private note and I will pass on his email. This way they can start communicating. I am a West Pointer from East Texas and we did this for all area incoming plebes and it really helped. I had friends before I ever stepped on the academy grounds.

MMI does not appear to have a swim team and a search on the USA Swimming website does not list a USA swim club within 30 miles of Marion.

Rustypc, The school will be assigned by CGA. I suggest your DS join the CGAS Scholar's Facebook page, if he hasn't already. Likewise for you. If you don't have a Facebook account, it's time to make one. Other parents and "interested partys" will post pictures from the Academy and the prep schools. Then it becomes your personal game of "Where's Waldo". You will be assimilated.

PM me if you want the Facebook pages. There is one for this year's Scholars, which will switch to the class page a year from now. There are also a couple pages for the parents, which will have lots of helpful answers and advice. And those pictures.
