I just had a few pop-up questions today that I'm curious about, some are kind of silly though.

1] Is there ever any Cheesecake served in the Mess Halls? (Silly Question)
It's my favorite dessert, it won't kill me if there isn't, never was nor will ever have any, but it would be something to enjoy while I'm there lol.

2] There's no smoking in the Dorms but what about anywhere else outdoors in the campus? I don't smoke nor intend on it, but I know all, if not many of the teachers are Military Officers and quiet a bit of soldiers smoke.

3] I know there is no "best" degree for people wanting to go into Infantry, but which would help out the most? I want to do Political Science but I know that probably wouldn't be much help.

4] When you go to Airborne School, Air Assault, or any other MIAD in WP, does it take place during your Summer Leave? Or before, or after then? OR does it all depend on what you are going to take?

5] For CTLT, do you choose or have the option to submit where you want to go? Or does it all depend on what you've done, etc etc and is all up to someone "up there" and you have no actual power over it?

6] I'm a Junior and wish to go to the Summer Leaders Seminar but am having trouble applying online, I was born in 94' and my graduation year is 2013 but the online application "does not recognize" this as a "proper" year. Do I just call and ask about this? I just hope it doesn't affect anything.

Thank you for (whomever may read this) time!

The deadline is April 1st. But I'm not too sure. Hopefully someone could answer for us? You plan on going this year? (to be technical, next year lol).

My cadet did AA this summer. He had a couple of weeks off after graduation week and then did AA, had one day off, and had to go straight to Camp Buckner. So he was gone for six weeks straight--he had a couple of weeks off at the end, then it was time for school to start again. Other cadets had time off between their MIAD and CFT depending on the session dates.

Some cadets who were doing the first Airborne session left before graduation to head to Ft. Benning.

So it basically all depends? Thank you! It helps a lot.

Yes, the plan (per West Point Admissions facebook page) is for the SLS application to open in mid-January.

    1. Rare occasion, the desserts in the mess hall aren't really something you look forward to though..

    2. There is no smoking allowed inside of Cadet Area. There are two designated smoking areas right next to it though, one just outside of North Area, the other just outside of Central Area.

    3. The best degree is whichever one you are interested in. People who enjoy their time here the most are the ones who also enjoy their degree. There is no specific "Infantry Degree." In the past a lot of people who wanted to go Infantry would take something like an English Degree or another "easy" degree in order to increase their class rank, but the new branching system doesn't take class rank into account as much so it depends more on what you do while you are at the academy.

    4. You have so much time for your summers. You are required to do some things such as BEAST, CFT, a leadership detail, a MIAD, CTLT, CLDT, etc. but what you do with the rest of your summer is up to you. Some cadets will just do the minimum summer training requirements, and then go home or vacation for the rest. Other cadets will spend almost their entire summer doing different summer training programs such as Airborn, Air Assault, etc. Depends on the type of person you are and how much time you want to spend at home or on vacation.

    5. For CTLT you get to submit your preferences of what post you want to go to and what type of unit you want to be attached to. Most of the time cadets get what they want.

    6. Unless they have changed it from when I applied to SLS a while ago, the application didn't even open until December. I may be wrong though.

You can apply to SLS starting in December IIRC. I got my acceptance letter on the 24th of December.

    The desserts are bad? :frown:

Can you do more then 1 MIAD per Summer? Or is it limited to only 1? Or does it all depend?

Smoking is greatly discouraged in the officer corps. I have known only two RLOs who smoked.

    1) We had cheesecake a few times this summer during Beast and already this school year- it was the dessert for the Nininger Dinner. Don't get your hopes up (it's not going to be the best cheesecake you've ever had) but there are some mess hall desserts that are actually pretty good.
    2) Not that many people at West Point smoke, but yes, there are areas outside the cadet area where people can and do smoke.

I think the desserts are decent. The cheesecake with blueberry topping is at least really good.

Cheesecake is always a favorite here.

As for smoking, I don't think I've ever seen any of the professors smoking here. The people you tend to see smoking are the cadets themselves...

There is a Cheesecake Factory about 30 minutes away...might not be something you'll be able to enjoy until much later but still something to look forward to.

I don't see officers smoking much if at all. Cadets smoke in the designated smoking areas.

Unfortunately yes although we haven't seen them recently. They're attempting to make the mess hall "healthier" so we've been getting some interesting meals.

Supposedly there is an attempt underway to improve the food at USMA, but DS has not seen a significant change.

Don't know if this was initiated by the new Comm, but we hear the grad associates talk about it as they apparently got behind the effort.

DS's view: "It's institution food... better than scout or church camp or HS cafeteria. But worse than your favorite restaurant. There is always something I can eat, I never go hungry. It's no big deal, fine dining is not why I'm here."

I heard the menu is expected to change (for the better) when the new fiscal year begins because a new company will be providing the food (the one who serves USNA and USAFA). I can't vouch for the validity of this since it came from the cadet rumor mill but it doesn't sound too far fetched.
