So this forum helped me out a lot when I was applying to the Academy so I think it's only fair if I give back by answering any questions about life at the Academy or Plebe Summer. My one caveat is that I've only been a Midshipman for like 2 &1/2 months so there will be limits to my knowledge.

With that in in mind, ask away.

Awesome! What was the hardest part of the Application process and Plebe summer? Do you get any free time during plebe summer? What time did they come get you up in the morning? Is it still tough? What do you want to do in the Navy/Marine Corps? Ill most likely have more but here's a couple...

Oh yeah and another thing, what do you want to major in? What is Bancroft like living in? I saw everyone in the brigade because I was at the last plebe parade, at reform weekend, so is pass and review hard? Is it hard to keep a straight face? What was the best part about plebe summer? Do you like Saturdays so you can go to town? I loved Annapolis and really want to attend the Naval Academy, and SAFP has helped with lots of information, even though I'm only a 7th grader. Once again I'm still brimming with questions....:)

Do you get to call home a lot, (not like every night, but can you whenever at night?) do you ever get to go home? What are YOU most excited and nervous for? Have you ever costed the Academy before hand? Are the Uniforms itchy?

I'm also a current plebe, so I'll take a stab at answering some questions.

For the Application process, probably the worst thing for me was the essays.

For Plebe Summer, it was definitely dealing with being homesick.

No, but you do get from 2100-2130 to write your thought of the day, take a shower, do laundry ect...
    0530.

You practice it enough that it becomes pretty easy.

Yes, especially when the detailers purposely try to make you laugh.

The special training we got to do, like the wet trainer, the E-Course ect...

Its great to just get off the yard for a couple of hours.

    CVW Goodies

Will be at a CVW what types of goodies would a plebe enjoy i.e. cookies, store-bought or home made, snickers, peanut butter cups etc. or healthy food?
All sides are welcome. Just trying to say thanks to the plebe host for letting a drag hang around.

Anything you send will be appreciated. Homemade is always good, since they eat institutionalized food 3x a day--brownies in a disposable pan might travel well?

with the current mice and bed bug situation brownies in a tin or air tight container would be great. The mice loooooved my son's Chicago-flavored popcorn I sent him is a ziplock baggie.

    Mice bed bugs OH NO!

What is the situation with the mice and bed bugs.? Should we put the cookies and brownies in a ziploc container?

The mice are simply occupants in Mother B. Some even name their mice...it is what it is and I hate mice with a passion.

The BB are being taken care of.

Whenever you have that many people living together, there's gonna be mice and BB.

But like I said USNA is taking care of the BB and the building is too old to try to stop the mice.

My understanding is that the bed bug issue is relatively contained at the moment. Nonetheless, the last CVW they took all the drags that were assigned to companies with bed bugs and placed then in ones that did not have any bed bugs, so your son/daughter should be fine in that regard.

As for the mice, they are, and probably always will be, in Bancroft. As long as you put whatever food you have in a plastic container, they won't get to it.

    Now for the questions:
18 MIDN hit most of them, but I'll give some more input

The hardest part of the application process for me was the medical part because I had a medical condition and for a while I was not sure if it was going to be waived or not.

I came in wanting to do Marine Corps Aviation, but now I'm not so sure. One of the positives of USNA over the other SAs is that there is a wider variety of things you can do after graduation, so it's a good place to go if you know you want to serve in the military as an officer but aren't quite sure exactly what you want to do specifically.

The academic year pretty tough from a time management standpoint. Living in Bancroft can get stressful because you have a whole bunch of upperclass monitoring you and disciplining you when you screw something up. There is not a ton of privacy and the days are pretty long. It could be worse though.

Can you elaborate on your medical condition, how common waivers are, and the timeline of when you received your waiver? I was DQ'd by DODMERB a few weeks ago for having an eye that is not correctable to 20/20. I am hoping to get a waiver for this, obviously, but don't know how common they are.
