Questions for a Freshman Cadet

I'm sure a hollowed out bible would accomplish that 10x better, but hiding contraband in a BIBLE seems like a bad idea :shake:.

Except tons of us did. I brought pictures, addresses, etc. in mine when I entered BCT.

Okay, cool. I'll try that. My girlfriend said she'd give me one with a few pictures if I got an appointment.

It'd be a little sketchy to hollow it out, but to just tuck things into the pages is no big deal.

Thats pretty BA.

On average how much time is spent a night on homework?

In my case, I have a very weighted schedule. Here at the academy we have M and T days alternating every other day. My M days are stacked with 6 of the 7 possible periods while my T days only have 2. Therefore the night before a T day I will only have an hour or two, but I spend almost all my free periods on T days doing homework for my 6 classes on the next day. Usually a minimum of at least an hour per period. So double period classes like Physics and Foreign Languages I spend twice as much time on (which is needed). After intramurals, training sessions, and anything else I am required to do, I can usually find an hour or two of free time to work out, have some fun, or just go to bed.

Later,

Brian

My son said first semester at least he spent as much time each night on homework at USAFA as he did in a semester in high school. To which his younger brother replied "That makes it sound like he ever DID homework in high school!"

So wait, is validating AP classes for highschool? Also, if you go to a very tough school w/o AP Classes, can you take the test to try to validate them for AP credits? Thanks.

Some classes you can validate with just high AP scores (ie Behavioral Science, Physics), but others you take placement tests for (Calc, Chem, Computer Science) and the registrar takes both these tests and the AP tests into account.

Hey! If anyone has questions you'd like to ask me, a freshman, I'll be glad to answer them. Having just been through basic training, and going through freshman year currently, I can give you up-to-date information and an inside look.

It's gotten too 'heavy and off usefull' topics on the AFA forum lately. ;-)

So Jezzie, what's been the biggest surprise or two that despite all the research you did prior to going which really caught you off guard?

When to freshmen have to take the BCT 'for real scoring' these days?

Do you know how many of your class has dropped out so far from your original reporting date? Do you feel like they are being harder on grading things and less lenient on letting you stay at the USAFA of you 'don't measure up quickly' somewhere to reduce enrollment quickly?

Have they said they are cutting back on any programs due to budget concerns?

BTW, when do this year's seniors find out what their assignments are and do you know of where they publish prior year assignments? We're really curious to find out recent trends as to how many recently have been going to UPT vs. UAVs vs. Nav training vs. immediate grad school vs. med school etc.

The seniors will find out their assignment base on February 16th. They all already found out their AFSC (job) last spring. It's kind of a two-level system of notification. Spring of 3-degree year they find out their job. Around 100 days before graduation, they find out exactly which base they will go to.

There is a list of the AFSCs that the 2011s got on this thread:

I know we will be anxiously waiting for a phone call on the 16th!

I have wondered this for years, does USAFA really have a Formula SAE team(society of automotive engineers)? It is something I am really interested in at my Plan B school, but apparently USAFA has/had a team. Do you know anything about this? Go to 00:22 of this video..

Do any of you know brothers or sisters who attended together but were a couple years apart as cadets (e.g., a 2 Degree and a 4 Degree)? Were they allowed to be in the same squadron? Was the older one allowed to check in on the younger one during BCT? Did the younger one get beat more or singled out for special attention or training because he had an older brother in the Wing? Did the younger one cope better because he had an older brother there?

Can't speak for the rest but no, siblings can not be in the same squadron at the same time, and no, the older sibling would technically not be able to check in on the younger. If you're not basic cadre, you're not supposed to interact with the basics.

Now if that older sibling was basic cadre...it's quite possible. One of the girls in my squad had a sister who was a junior working 2nd BCT, and she would check-up on her every so often. She didn't really get singled out for extra attention, but I have heard of it happening, although all in good fun and usually instigated by the older sibling. It kind of depends on the relationship between them.

And yeah, for sure siblings cannot be in the same squadron. But, there are a set of twins in 2012 who are in the same group.

Spring of 2-degree year*

classroom environment

I've been wondering about just the general feel of classes at the academy. My friends seem to think the teachers are drill sargeants. I know the teachers are probably great, but how comfortable can you get in a classroom?

My AP teachers this year are great, and the classroom environments in all those classes are very friendly. My peers and I help each other, crack jokes (usually on topic), and I never feel afraid to ask the teacher a question if I don't understand something. I'm also never afraid to answer a question a teacher asks, even if I'm wrong the teacher just explains the correct answer and I don't feel like I messed up or failed. It's a very comfortable learning environment, I'm wondering if cadets can relate to that.

Teachers are definitely not drill sergeants. Academics are supposed to take place in a relaxed, "academic" atmosphere. The instructor's I've had this year sound much like your high school teachers. Their focus is to teach cadets and make sure they understand the material. They are very open to questions and go out of their way to give you extra instruction (EI) when you need it. Plus, the instuctors are a mix of military and civilians. About half of my teachers this year were civilians.
