My DS is currently waiting on 3rd board for possible AROTC scholarship. He has been accepted to Norwich, VMI, Citadel and Campbell. VMI is his 1st choice school. He plans to major in mechanical or civil engineering.

He plans to reach out the the ROO officer. I was wondering if there are questions that are off limits? Is it ok to ask how many 3 and 4 year scholarship slots they have?

What questions do you suggest he ask ( we have a list started)?
He plans to call between end of school day and drill practice, but that is limited time, are they usually available after hours? Is email contact acceptable or is calling better?

Can he ask about campus scholarships should he not get awarded one from the board, or is that pushy?

The ROO officer was not one of the people speaking on behalf of the AROTC at the overnight. Should DS be contacting the ROO officer or one of the men who spoke to parents and potential cadets at the overnight. One was the Department Head.

I am a 3 year AD scholarship recipient, and I have been in frequent contact with my ROO over the past 4-5 months or so. I have asked him plenty of times about a possible campus based scholarships. I personally don't think that it's too pushy, as mine told me that I would likely get a campus based scholarship if I did not receive a national one. You should ask questions like: "how many campus based scholarships were awarded last year?" "How many scholarships do you expect to have available next year?"

Also keep in mind that they won't be able to guarantee him a campus scholarship, since that will have to be determined once all of the upcoming cadets get on campus. They should be able to tell him if he has a good chance of being competitive with one though.

Campus scholarships are not controlled by the ROO but the ROO should be aware. We do not have a set number of 3 or 4 year scholarships and knowing that would not help the student. Keep in mind that the ROO is normally the busiest member of the Cadre and is managing a lot of people (and their expectations). I mention that because sometimes phone contact can be time consuming. Calling to ask arbitrary questions steals time from a family that may need it more.

I like phone calls but for a list of questions I would suggest email.

Concur with Bama...send an email. Also concur that what was awarded last year may not be what is awarded this year. Worry about what you can control and don't try to out think the process.

I would also tell you that the schools on his list are a little different than most, so the ROO at the SMCs may have a little different attitude towards customer service. That being said, the worst that can happen is your questions go unanswered and you have to rely on the kindness of strangers on a discussion board.
