Nomination Question

As of today, my son has two nominations for USNA. One from his Congressman and one from his HS Principal (His NJROTC Unit at HS is a Distinguished Unit). He is still waiting to hear from Senators Lautenberg and Menendez. Do more nominations put a candidate at an advantage?

...Do more nominations put a candidate at an advantage?

I would not say that the candidate is at an advantage with more noms. You only need one nom to get in. However, more than one nom does give the SA a little flexibility in building the class. It helps the SA more than the candidate, but anything that helps them can translate to helping you.

Let me try to explain. Your son has a nom from his Rep. He is presumably one of ten names on the slate from which the SA can select one to charge to the MOC. If your son has the highest WCS on the slate, he'll get the appointment. However, if the #2 on the slate is a candidate that the SA wants but that person only has one nom (from your MOC and no others) the SA cannot appoint them because your son has the highest WCS. Now, since your son has another nom source the SA may elect to charge your son to that source and appoint both your son and the #2 from your MOC slate. All of that is assuming your MOC submitted a competitive slate with no principal nominee.

There are certainly other examples that could take pages to explain but this gives you the general idea and shows how it really is more of a help to the SA than to your son. Basically, it gives the SA options. And, of course the story could have been exactly the opposite. Your son could be #2 and not be able to get an appointment because of it - but having the 2nd nom source gives the SA another means to appoint your son.

There are many other variables that apply (national pool/sup noms etc) but it really just complicates the explanation more than it helps so suffice it to say that it is complicated but having more than one can be helpful, though not what I would call a real "boost". Your son's WCS is what it is and the number of noms cannot change that. It simply means that he can be put into multiple pools from which to draw.

Where in NJ are you from?

My congressman is Lobiondo. Today I recieved a letter nominating me to WP and USAFA.

We live in Central NJ. My son received a nomination from Congressman Smith and one from his HS Principal.

Congrats to him. I live in south Jersey, Congressman Lobiondo gave me noms to USAFA and USMA

Another Nomination Question

If I am understanding correctly, the nominations go into separate pools; i.e., congressional, senators, etc. Does anyone know if there is a separate pool for nominations made by NJROTC units? My son has one of these because his HS NJROTC Unit is a distinguised unit in Area 4. He also has a nomination from our Congressman and is waiting on our State Senators.

Yes, 20 appointments are given from the pool of ROTC and JROTC honor unit nominees.
Twenty honor graduates of schools designated as honor
schools by any military branch, and from members of the
Secretary’s service Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

AFROTC

Thanks again for everyone's input. I have some very good news!

Christopher was verbally notified that he has been selected to receive the AFROTC Type 1 Scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines! Very, very, cool!

He is obviously very excited and is looking forward to getting his acceptance letter from ROTC.

I'll keep you posted on progress, but it looks like he'll have to post in the ROTC area from now on.

Thanks again!

David
