Hello Everyone! My son has received his principal appointment to KP and is very excited about attending. We have so many questions and unfortunately will not be able to make the open house as we will be on a previously scheduled vacation. We also received an invitation to a parent's group meeting but again, have a prior engagement the same weekend. Where can we get information? What types of clothing and supplies will he need? Will he need to have any vaccines or licenses/passport upon arrival? Are kids able to leave for the weekend? What do they need in terms of spending money while at KP? In general, he wants to be prepared but we don't know what to do to get prepared. HELP!!!!

Sundance,
Congrats to you and your son!

Call the admission office. A day visit or an overnight visit can be set up for your son. Contact your parent group again. Even though you can't make their meeting, I'm sure someone will answer your questions or you can do a search around on the forum.

Your son will receive a 'Logging In' book in the next few months. It will have all the info you need. In the past it was also posted on the bottom of the USMMA website. If you click on it now, it says it's under renovation.

He will need vaccines as well as a valid passport and his TWIC card.

He will be unable to leave the campus until Parent's weekend which is usually held around Labor Day. Plan now to visit during parent's weekend. He will get off campus more if on a team but as a plebe, he will not leave campus during the week.

Spending money is dependent on what your son does with his free time but during Indoc he will set up an account with Navy Federal Credit Union. He'll need some cash to buy school supplies etc. My DS orders things online and then has it shipped to KP. You will also get to know your post office staff as you mail care packages etc.

Hang on~the roller coaster ride has just begun but WHAT A RIDE!

I totally second what KP13Mom wrote and I loved this part of her post:

"Last edited by KP13Mom; 4 Minutes Ago at 05:01 PM. Reason: because I can't type......"

I think I'll be using that reason from now on when I edit a post...

Seriously Congratulations and in addition to the Logging In book if the Parent's Association does an update to their book on what you need to know then I'd suggest you get it too. Lots of good advice there as well. Otherwise please keep your hands and feet inside the coaster's cars at all times!

Congratulations! They are not a kiddin' about the roller coaster. We did not attend the open house or drive to a neighboring state for our area meeting. DS did however attend an overnight visit on his own the previous August as the plane tickets were the only thing he asked for his birthday. All the information you seek is here on this forum. Start mining the USMMA threads from the beginning forward. You will laugh and learn everything you need to know and then come up with questions you didn't know to ask. By the time you get the "Logging IN" booklet in the mail you be prepared for the exact list. (Tip: Walmart Starter dark blue mesh athletic shorts for $9 bucks. This one item seemed to blow our minds last summer, lol). All white crew socks, no logo's, information like this you will find in the weirdest places as you experience thread drift . Wisdom teeth removal, another riveting topic you willl discover. You will also find an older copy of Logging In posted somewhere and it is close enough to learn all you need for now. You will read enough to have favorite hero posters and villains as well. They know who they are! You will also get a better idea about the culture of KP. I am afraid the Parents Facebook pages set up for the year of the students has lessened the amount of sharing you will find from this year on this forum but what is here is gold :thumb: This is such an exciting time.
Since my DS had been to KP once we made the decision to let him fly out on his own to report and that worked out fine for us. Parents Weekend was amazing that is a MUST!

Thank you so much for the information. This gives us a place to start. I totally get the roller coaster, as this whole experience so far has been a roller coaster of activities and emotions! Right now we are enjoying being very proud and very excited!!!! If you think of anything else, no matter how small, please let me know, and thanks again!

We were not centrally located to a parents group that had meetings. Our son had a mentor that helped us through the process. The logging I info that you will get explains everything that you will need. You can also look back through older posts on this site that will give you a lot of info. Good luck and enjoy the roller coaster ride. Our son made it through and graduated in 2011. Going out to parents weekends and experiencing a little of the life they lead was great.

Please feel free to post any and all questions. You can check the National Parents Association for a roster if you need to hear a voice and get guidance the old fashioned way.
Welcome to the KP family and get a seatbelt, the ride is just starting. Be sure to wrap your DS in bubble wrap until Indoc.
