At NGCSU, they have a ranger camp where you can participate in the mountain phase of ranger school. do they have something like this at USMA?

that's definitely good if CBT is as hard as ranger school, the one of for elite officers with military experience already under them. just makes me want to go even more now.

Sorry...was thinking of the BSA ranger camp up there...CBT is of course not the same (CBT=beast); you may choose to do ranger school while at WP during one of the summers, if you are selected to do so. It's not a guarantee that you'll be selected...many want to do it.

Small correction -- cadets are NOT authorized to attend Ranger school -- it is only for active duty personnel. Years ago they allowed cadets (both USMA and ROTC) to attend, but it has been a long time.

Cadet2012 -- Ranger school is not for "elite officers". The vast majority of those attending are enlisted and NCO's.

NGCSU has a program at Camp Merrell where the Mountain Phase of Ranger school is held -- they DO NOT put people through the Mountain Phase of Ranger school.

Thanks for correcting my mis-information! So it looks like if he wants Ranger Camp, he needs to contact the boy scouts, who do have a ranger camp in the N. Georgia mountains!!

I'm afraid I failed to clearly make one of the points -- NGCSU (and BSA) both run "Ranger Camps" -- either is NOT any phase of Ranger School. They are allowed to use some of the training facilities at Camp Merrell. The actual Mountain Phase of Ranger school is too dangerous physically to put youngsters through -- among other things it includes sleep and food deprivation. Ranger school is designed to take you to your breaking point both physically and mentally. Things to send any youth camp risk assessment manager screaming into the night...

...and I did not mean to imply the BSA camp was similar in training either...it is an outdoor adventure camp that shares the same name...similarities pretty much end there (apologies to my friend the camp director who would not appreciate that thought, but it's the truth!).

yeah, Moutain Phase of Ranger School is pretty much the worst experience on the face of this planet, I would not wish it on anyone.

I hate to repeat whats already been said but WP does not send cadets to Ranger School. But you if your interested in some tough schools there are a select few who go to Sapper and SERE. I want to try to go to SERE. From what I've heard though the competition is pretty tough.

Poyner, It is great to hear from you. Thanks for your comments. I did not know SERE school was one of the "summer school" options for cadets. Good luck with your classes!

sorry for the wrong words...i was trying to emphasize the already having been through USMA/ROTC and officer basic training or for enlisted their experience over the still fresh civilians entering CBT.

for the NGCSU program, can you participate in this in high school like the National Leadership Challenge Weekend or is it for attending students only? also, what do you do at NGCSU ranger camp?

...yes. I'm definitely going for that. never thought about that one. you know, they might already have one, but they need a list of schools you can attend while still a cadet.

The problem is...... West Point is a fluid environment. It is continually changing. Summer training has changed the past few summers - even if a particular training was offered last summer there is no guarantee that it will be offereed next summer.

For instance, West Point cadets can now attend some schools like Airborne and Air Assault, the summer after Plebe year. Formerlly these programs were not open to cadets until they had finished their Yearling year.

My feeling is that West Point cadets get the most opportunities for summer training. Many ROTC cadets are offered and do take advantage of excellent summer training programs but I think West Point cadets have the most choices.
