Ranger certification

If you are talking about going to the Ranger School, it will depend on what branch you pick.

If you are Infantry or going into non-Infantry position coded for Ranger qualification, you should be sent to Ranger school after graduating from your basic course.

My son is graduating from West Point and was told if he picks Italy as a choice he will have to complete Ranger School.

If you DS branched Infantry, he will definitely go to Ranger school. I know Italy might be different, but I have seen plenty of Infantry officer still going overseas without Ranger tab. I don't remember any of my classmates (WP and IOBC) getting their assignment changed because they didn't get Ranger qualified). Of course in my days, certain BDEs in light divisions didn't give line infantry platoon leader position to LTs with no Ranger tab. Assuming your DS picked Infantry, there is a chance of him going straight into a staff positions (i.e. assistant, assistant S3) if he doesn't get Ranger qualified.

I do remember that a classmate of mine that chose Vicenza was required to be ranger qualified or he would loose the slot. He was FA. Congrats to your DS if he is able to get Italy. He must be ranked very, very high in OML to get that slot.
