If you reapply to the academy, we know that it is a big plus. One question, though. How do the ROTC units view this--spending a year in their program then leaving? Should you tell your commander of your plans?

I was in that situation this year. I recommend telling your ROTC commander at the beginning of the year. I made it clear that while I hoped to attend USAFA the following year, I would remain 100% committed to the ROTC detachment throughout my year there. He told me that he isn't terribly pleased to be losing me next year, but he is supportive of my decision. Be honest with your CO about your future plans and inform him/her sooner rather than later. Odds are that he/she will be supportive of your decision.

I was in the same situation and I agree. It is always best to be honest. Make sure you make it clear you will be committed to AFROTC throughout the year. Act like it is what you are planning to do. It will be hard for them to see you go, but they will be supportive, even if they do make a few jokes about USAFA. Good luck!

I was also in this situation this year. I would say that before you even think about spreading the word that you are leaving next year for a service academy, you must seriously contemplate the notion that you may not get an appointment or you may want to stay in ROTC. With that, (you might already know) the commander at each AFROTC det can give nominations to USAFA, so I would just bring it up when you contact him or her to apply for one. Because, in reality, once you contract at an AFROTC det, you will stay there until you commission unless you transfer to the Academy-- You are an AFROTC cadet who is applying to the Academy, not an Academy candidate who is staying at the AFROTC det for a year. Just my opinion though.

On that note, I would definitely reapply and do the very best that you can while in college :thumb:
