Recognition Ceremony

All due respect but I disagree with your assessment of the Styrofoam check, IMHO it shows the depth of this prestigious award after 4 years of hard work and achievement. Are there people that think it's a free education? Sure, but it's your job to educate them when announcing this award and Appointment.

My son ended up declining his NROTC Marine Corps Option scholarship and the Marine Recruiter (Captain and 6 NCO's) insisted that they show up at Awards night and present the $150,000 check anyway. They also gave an $80,000 check (although it was filled in with a grease pencil, they needed it at another school that same night, my son's was printed, laminated and kept by my son) to a kid that enlisted.
My sons West Point Prep presentation was by a local West Point Captain and he gave about a 3 minute presentation (very similar to what you've described) and handed my son that diploma cased Appointment certificate, he did announce that the scholarship was valued at $350,000 and yes, there was a hush over the audience after that and the Captain explained the commitment required to receive that scholarship. Not a dry eye in the room on the Parents side.

I agree. Alot of people don't understand how prestigious it is and just think it's the same as enlisting. The value shows how much of an accomplishment it is to everyone (sad but true...money is the universal language).

My recruiter valued it at $325,000 though. Is the extra money for USMAPS or are all these just estimates and there is no concrete value?

A check that you cant use for anything. If you ask me thats just taking it to the next level. Why would you give out fake check that to someone in front of hundreds of people to brag. If they dont know how prestigous an appointment is they probably never cared. In my opinion all you need to do is just say how much it is worthed and be done with it.

That is what I meant, stating the value. I couldn't care less about the check.

USAFA Presentation at Senior Recognition Night

My son's ALO presented his appointment to USAFA at Senior Recognition Night. School's last SA appointment was back in mid-1990s and had no recent experience with it. But they had the ALO kick-off the awards night (only outsider to present). Son was called down and his ALO (a Lt Col and USAFA grad dressed in full blues) made a 2 1/2 minute presentation that was halted momentarily with loud applause after he announced it equivalent to a full scholarship valued at over $403,000. He proceeded with description of "very cool" career opportunities available and told everyone that they all should be real proud of my son's accomplishments. He emphatically stated that his appointment was a reflection of his class, his school and his community, and the place went wild. Son was given the only standing ovation (out of 227 students) by both his classmates and the crowd of over 1,200 parents and family. I had numerous other parents come up afterward who indicated how moved they were by the presentation and how proud they were of my son. Needless to say it was equally moving to my wife and I as well as our son! Priceless!!!

Congratulations!!

Our son was presented with his Army ROTC Scholarship a couple of weeks ago at his Senior Awards Night. He will be attending the University of Idaho next fall, and the Executive Officer, a major, and the Training Officer, a Master Sergeant, very kindly drove 2 and a half hours to where we live in Washington State to make the presentation. They arrived in full dress uniforms, and it was really something to see. The major did a fantastic job of describing ROTC, and the high standards that have to be met in order to serve as an officer in the United States Army. At that point, my husband and I were already completely overcome with pride and emotion, but then he turned around the giant check and showed the value of the scholarship at $74,000, and the auditorium just erupted in applause and cheers. And it went on....and on...and on. It was very overwhelming. I know that amount is not much compared to an Academy education, but for our school, it was just huge. There was a lot of handshaking and pats on the back for our son when we got off the stage, and it just got better as a good friend of his was next up and presented with a Navy ROTC scholarship to WSU by a Marine officer (also in full dress). I think everyone left feeling extremely proud and patriotic, it was a great night. The three men involved in the presentations did their respective services proud, and our kids felt really honored by their presence (and even more excited now about becoming one of them!) My son told me that the next day at graduation rehersal, several college bound young men asked him about ROTC, so apparently, it was inspiring to more than just us parents! Just wanted to share another good night thanks to the great people serving our country and representing ROTC here in the Northwest! Good luck to all next year!
