    Hey guys,

I've been researching around, but still can't find a definite answer. Regarding recommendations, are there certain teachers that you must get them from? For example, is it absolutely mandatory to get recs from core subject teachers such as english or math? (Maybe even the school guidance counselor?)

Also, what is required to complete the West Point sls app? I want to start/finish it on January 10 if possible since I know it's rolling admissions for that program. Are recommendations or essays required? I know those were not required for the Air Force sls app.

Also, I am rather interested in attending Boys State this year, but there seems to be no application yet? (Can anyone double check that for me please?) My school does not participate in it, but I want to individually register. Although I emailed them a couple of weeks ago, they still haven't replied haha. Thanks! You guys are always so helpful :D

Well regarding recommendations, on your west point candidate app, you need three "School Official Evaluations", one for ENGLISH, MATH, PHYSICS/CHEMISTRY. Idk if you would count those as recommendations, but those are required by the west point app. It just alllows teachers you've had to evaluate your performance in those subjects.

For my interview with my congressman, he required three recommendations; one of which was my school guidance counselor. But that is your preference. WP doesn't directly want recommendations, but in order to get a nomination, you will need them (from my own personal experience). Make sure you ask your teachers early to have them write your recommendations.

    Armyhopeful,
Clamelken2 is right on the mark! What he has listed is mandatory. Regarding recommendations for you MOC's; your MOC will usually post what source they are looking for - ie: coach, clergy, employer... My son decided to obtain 3 recommendations beyond what was mandatory for West Point. He obtained a rec. from a coach (for athletic abilities), a leader of a local volunteer group my son is associated with (for community service) and a recommendation which speaks of his character. When being considered for a appointment, West Point looks for candidates with a high WCS (whole candidate scores). It is important to be more than 1 dimensional!

It depends on the MOC/Senator, they have different requirements. For example my MOC said I could use anyone to write 3 letters, but one one of my Senators required 2 specific people to write them. I would check on their websites, their requirements should be listed.

And of course, USMA itself has the SOE's. My teachers said they were fairly simple, besides the fact that they filled them out during the middle of their summer vacation.

I don't completely remember the SLS app, but I believe that I was able to complete it all through my Candidate portal.

For Boys State, try contacting your local American Legion. Mine set me up to go and even payed for me to attend.

I've emailed Boys State several times in the past and NEVER heard anything back. Contact your local American Legion post. That's how my DS got to go.
