I applied to Summer Seminar and didn't get in. I was really bummed and thought that I probably wouldn't get accepted to the academy. What are my chances?

Academics:
-3.99 unweighted GPA
-Ranked 3/585
-5 AP classes so far, registered for 3 senior year
-April ACT was a 31.. will find out June score tomorrow

ECs:
-Varsity Cross Country (Captain, All-Conference, Academic All-State)
-Varsity Basketball (Captain)
-Varsity Track and Field (Captain, All-Conference, Academic All-State)
-NHS secretary junior year, elected president for next year
-Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Leadership role)
-Link Crew Leader
-Senior Leader
-Member of school's wind ensemble (highest band)
-Play in the top Jazz Band
-Employed at DJ company, work weddings and school dances on the weekends
-Volunteer at a hospital through a junior medical program ran by a large university

There's a couple more small things but this is the bulk of what I got. I have been in touch with my ALO and organizing my Congressional nomination applications. I am also traveling to Colorado to visit the academy next week.

There is no correlation between summer seminar and appointments. You don't get any extra points because you went to summer seminar. The fact that you applied to summer seminar is good. That goes a long way with receiving a nomination. Your senators/representive like to see that you want the academy so bad that you volunteered. So basically, you'll have the same chances of a nomination as the person who did go to summer seminar.

Plus, there are a lot more individuals applying for summer seminar and less slots. so even if every single person who received an appointment put in for summer seminar, there's no way all of them could go. There just aren't that many slots. Plus; all the information you give when you apply to summer seminar is "Self Reported". In other words, it's not official.

The only thing summer seminar is for, is so you, the applicant, can see if the academy is really something you want to apply for. It's not for the academy. Again; there is no correlation. The only reason you might see a lot of cadets who happen to have gone to the summer seminar, is because most individuals who receive appointments are a lot more motivated. They almost all volunteered for summer seminar. Most all took advanced classes. Most all were involved heavily in sports. They are a much more motivated applicant. So don't worry about it. Whether you go to summer seminar or not, it will have absolutely 0% affect on your appointment application. The only area it helps is with applying for your nomination. And being you applied for summer seminar, that's all that matters. Good luck.

not related

Not getting into the summer seminar has nothing to do with getting into the USAFA. The SS is for getting more potential canidates exposure to the USAFA. My son didn't get to go and next week he is reporting with the rest of the class of 2017.

The main thing you can do is to do your best at everything you do. Also, read the forum as it is full of good advice.

It's difficult to say but I wouldn't give up just based on not being accepted to summer seminar. Our DS wasn't accepted either but is now a 2017 appointee. When we visited the USAFA last spring they said its harder to get into seminar since they don't have a lot of criteria to evaluate/eliminate potential students. You have to apply to find out, that's the only way to really know. Good luck to you!

Summer Seminar

Our D did get into summer seminar and her BGO pounded it into her that it means nothing...think of it as summer camp and a time to tour and learn about the academy. PERIOD. "Your work began in 9th grade with grades, sports and leadership. It continues when you get back from the seminars and have to apply'.

In his view, with all of the academies the seminars are recruitment tools for those who otherwise might not have a chance to visit or really learn about the academies.

Last year two from her school were rejected from USAFAss, NASS and WPsle. Now one is headed to USAFA and the other to USNA.
A hometown friend was rejected from last summer SLE, but got into NASS. He is headed to WP.

Many if not most midshipmen D met at NASS had NOT gone to ss (not sure about USafa ss, as she is not back yet).

Let it go, try and go and visit and do a tour if you can and keep working on your 'resume'. You look competitive from what little I know.

Keep up the good work.

Hoop, Its no big deal. There are better camps and ways to spend your summer in your hometown. Your hosp volunteering and DJ job look great, keep it up and keep at your grades and stuff.

You got this!

Give yourself about an hour to be disappointed, then set your sights on your final year of high school and continuing to build a strong record for the actual application. I did not receive an offer to attend summer seminar, yet I just managed to graduate in the top eight percent of my class. Bottom line, don't be too concerned.

Also, if it means anything to you. I know individuals who got accepted to summer seminar and didn't get an appointment to any of the academies.
