DS, a contracted AROTC MS1, decided to get a tattoo this summer. After studying the new tattoo regs, he got a rather large one on his upper arm. We will not discuss his parents opinion on this....Any how, he emailed the DoDMERB help desk asking how to report it, as we were under the impression they had to be informed. They answered very quickly, saying that since he is already medically qualified and participating in ROTC, that he should report it to his PMS upon returning to school.
I thought that was interesting info that someone else might be interested in hearing.

Let us know how things work out when your DS gets back to school.

Wow, hindsight DS temporary orange/green hair was clearly not a big whoop. We too are learning how to maneuver this new chapter/ relationship with our oldest. Summary seems to be "Well Dad, you know what they say about opinions!" Days gone by tattoos and/or location could have negative impact on MOS, and for some civilian careers. Restrictions have probably changed now. As Kinnem suggested post update on how PMS/Cadre reacts. Good luck.

DS showed his tattoo to his MS2 instructor and was told "That's fine.". When further quizzed as to his exact words, DS replied he could not remember....so not sure if there was more to the story or if all is indeed "fine". I know one of the custodians saw it and absolutely loved it.....

As long as it's not obscene or otherwise objectionable, it's fine. Just can't be on the head, neck, or hands, other than a ring tattoo. Pretty liberal policy nowadays.

There is usually a form they fill out, circle body part with note of size/what it is and pms keep. Looks exactly like a medical form, can't remember name sorry.

My DS has 2, one a Bible quote along the ribs was added after he started ROTC. He got a sideload scholarship and when they sent in the package for that he just had to fill out a waiver and take pictures in his skivvies to show that none of the tattoos were visible or objectionable and it was not an issue at all.
