Returning from Sea Year-Missing items

I guess there might be some truth to this as my DS just went to sea. My husband and I drove him and sea partner to the airport then needed to return back to KP to retrieve all their belongings (printers, uniforms). I was puzzled in that a few weeks ago he told me he'd be able to store his stuff in locked storage. He too reported that midshipmen are reporting missing stuff from the locked up storage facility. Maybe they should install a closed circuit camera then expel anyone who is caught stealing. I thought the same thing. So much for thou shall not lie, cheat or steal.

ive never actually talked to anyone who has had something go missing from the Regimental Baggage Locker, which is the locked storage that your son was referring to. there are rumors, yes, but its nearly IMPOSSIBLE to access that storage except at specified times. i would say there's a much larger chance of someone having forgotten to pack something, or packed it somewhere other than where they remembered, and thusly when its not where they expected, it was "stolen". the company baggage lockers are a different story, ive had stuff go "missing" from there before, most likely through the frantic purges that take place before each inspection when everything thats not labeled or stored properly gets tossed (because really, who steals rope?). however, as i said, i expect even theft from company BLs to cease with the new lockup policy.

VRSCDX, i really have to disagree. i would HATE not having my own printer. makes doing schoolwork much more convenient, having a printer/scanner/copier right on my desk and not having to wait in a line. plus, given the IT situation at the academy, 95% of the time the networking would be down, the community printer would be broken or out of ink, or some other technological malady would prevent me from printing out my Modern World paper:rolleyes:

Ah yes another "strange" thread on the USMMA Service Academy Forum ...

Wow anther strange thread that just seems to get stranger or sillier, depending on your perspective, with each additional post...

First we started the thread with what I'd say is basically an "I've heard and I'm shocked and appalled by dblomomkp2013:
" I have heard from a few 'veteran' parents to be prepared that there is a good possibility that while the mids were away at sea, their personal items that were LOCKED and stored at KP may be broken into. You've got to be kidding me!! Can anyone shed some light on this???

If this holds so much of one shred of truth that this type of behavior is on the campus this is shameful. Why have an honor code? AND if this holds any truth perhaps the new superintendent should become aware of the environment that is tolerated at the academy!!

Someone please respond to this post... "
Of course many just couldn't resist responding ranging from other equally appalled parents to a few mids and then of course some of the others on the network here like Luigi and Bruno. All of course trying to be helpful and that's the nice part of these forums but let's go back to the first post and examine it. before we move forward.

Do things occasionally get pilfered or stolen at any and all of the Service Academies? You betcha; do midshipmen occasionally get caught lying or cheating as well, yep, they do.

Does that mean there's no reason to have and enforce an honor code? Quite the opposite, I would say. As for whether Rear Admiral Green needs a post from a Class of 2013 parent, based on what they heard through the grapevine network of other "experienced parents", to be made aware of the fact that the USMMA exists in the real world, and that some members of the current regiment might be human beings who have lapses of judgment and might break the honor code today, just as the same thing happened from time to time while he attended the Academy as a midshipman from 1974 until he graduated in 1978; I doubt it will be a surprise or news to him. I also doubt that if some concrete facts and evidence were to accompany such a situation that he would ignore the situation, nor would he likely take into account the numerous pleas from outside sources without firsthand knowledge of the events or the situation while deciding what to do about it.

Of course from time to time things get stolen or "borrowed without permission." Should these issues be dealt with - yes. Should they be reviewed by an honor board and executive review board, yes. Will they be, most likely yes. Of course they should only be handled when they actually occur, not when someone hears about something without any specifics and details and chooses to become outraged without any specific evidence or reason to be so.

I just got back from the USMMA last evening. I took some stuff up to my own DS who flew right to KP from the West Coast after his second sea year. Do I believe the sort of stuff that was alluded to at the beginning of this thread occurs - yes. But without specifics and evidence damning the entire regiment and questioning the basis for the existence of the honor code seems totally unfounded and counter-productive. I helped my son carry some stuff to his room, then he, I and one of his classmates went to lunch yesterday. When lunch was over I returned them back to their rooms so they could finish their sea projects. I then went down to the waterfront to try and watch a little of the regatta that was underway. I say tried because in their current conditions the ends of neither of the two piers are open to the public. Their condition is horrible and basically unsafe. Why do I mention this? Well because if you are going to get outraged and driven to action about something that you think Rear Admiral Green should be doing something about then I think you ought to go to this thread and follow it's instructions:

Perhaps with appropriate funding our new Superintendent will be able to address truly obvious pressing issues where the facts are well known and documented rather than asking him to focus on responding to hearsay and innuendo. But hey what do I know - I mean it's just my opinion and we all know what opinions are like.

JUST TO FOLLOW UP - My mid returned yesterday. His stuff was in the locker untouched in the 4 months he was gone. He is astonished at how much stuff he put in there, so I guess his memory is a tad off. End of story for our family. And I hope all you others had happy endings as well. I would, however, be interested if there were any issues with this returning Split having missing items. Our Mid had an email he talked about that the storage lockers would be open at a certain time for returnees, so it does sound like they are clearly locked and sealed when not in use. I still maintain I believe this issue is so relatively small it does not deserve the attention it has received in this thread. The forum is an amplifier. And were we to hear about a couple isolated alcohol incidences at KP, before we know it, there would be posts on the forum about keg parties and open bars on every deck of the dorms.

VRSCDX-
Lucky you! My mid and his sea partner brought ALL their stuff to our house in June to 'keep it safe'. Their ensuing tornado came through here last week as they came home for some R & R and to rummage through all their stuff to see what was needed to return to KP on Saturday. Car did not move until I was sure that sea projects were actually in the car. Said car was packed to the gills and when I got home on Saturday night from returning them to school, I could hardly see a dent in the piles. Amazing that they left in July 09 with A seabag each.

Wouldn't trade it for the world!

My son's experience...

My son placed his boxes in the storage room after the end of classes this Spring, 2010. When he returned about a week later for summer school, he found they had been opened and various items including uniforms and speakers (that he had bought a few months earlier) were gone.

Remember that in any organization, no matter how select, about 10% shouldn't be there.

My son was also "missing" stuff when he returned from sea. It turns out that boxes were merely moved around to make room for more stuff. His boxes finally surfaced several weeks later -- after he had replaced a lot of his belongings thinking they had been stolen. He says the storage place is a pretty unorganized mess and you just have to hunt through it all to find your boxes when you return. Nothing will be right where you left it apparently.

Funny note, I received an e-mail from my KP roommate apparently during a bad rain storm her husband, also a classmate, grabbed the foul weather gear from plebe year. When he returned to the house she noticed the stencil had my name on it. I still have a complete set as well but I have no idea whose pants they are. I know missing things is no picnic but it is amazing how that stuff travels as well. :shake:
