This is cool. I was there last April when VMI gave Hillary Clinton an award- she gave a pretty thoughtful speech. Now Mitt Romney will give foreign policy speech on Monday. Hopefully Cadets will appreciate the chance to see movers and shakers up close- whether you agree with them or disagree with them, you learn a lot from listening to them and getting the chance to ask some questions of them.

Romney will be on post Monday the 8th. Per VMI, this event is not open to the public, only cadets.

Thanks for the date correction- I looked at the wrong week on my calendar when I was posting this:confused:. My understanding is that this is going to be held in front of a fairly small audience in the Leadership Center theater and seating will be First Classmen followed by 2Class with the rest of the Corps in Crozet watching it on a live stream. Still- should be a very interesting event for the cadets who get in to the auditorium.

I think they will be in Gillis Theater, which only seats around 500. I will find out more from my Rat tomorrow when we see him on post.

It will be in Gillis Theater....seating for First class on down. My Rat said he will be watching a live video feed of the event as there is not enough seating.

Gov Romney will be arriving by helicopter on the parade ground...should be some great pictures of it tomorrow!

Might have to lurk on the webcams tomorrow.. DS is looking forward to it as well. Any idea what time he will be arriving?

Romney will be *campaigning* at VMI. If he were speaking on Foreign Policy - I would think he would have some experience on his resume from which to draw and he clearly does not. Virginia is a very important swing state in this election and Romney needs all the votes he can get.
Not that I think this is a bad thing at all but lets call a spade a spade - clearly he is using the VMI Corps as props as he unfolds his Foreign Policy philosophy.

That said, it's pretty exciting to have the opportunity to sit in on a speech by a Presidential candidate. Hopefully the students will take advantage and be encouraged to become personally involved in the political process by making an informed decision when they cast their vote.

Do you mean experience like Obama had in 2008? I don't recall him making any speeches about community organizing.

Romney made a foreign policy speech at The Citadel a few months ago. That speech got a lot of attention and was well received.

as always- Please be civil when discussing.

+1. I believe he has as much experience in foreign police as many in congress does; and definitely more than most civilians. Therefor, he can definitely "speak" on the matter and present his position on how he believes it should be handled and how he will handle it.

I think it was pretty much just the First Class in the theater- I'm curious to hear a Cadet's perspective?

Bruno,
already had a quick call from my son - he and his roommate who some of cadets in front row. He wanted me to know so maybe I would see him on TV!
My son said it was great - I had heard that 1C and maybe 2C would have the seats in main place, but he confirmed that 1st class and ac stars were in main audience - others watched on moniter at another location.
Its rare to hear much from him these days espically during the day - so it was a big deal.

Women who've never been in the military or sexually assaulted speak on the "epidemic" of sexual assault in the military. Or are they just campaigning?

Gov. Romney is the Republican nominee for President, and the election is less than a month away. I don't think he can open his mouth without campaigning.

I agree that this is the reason for the visit, but I also note that for him to choose VMI as the place to give his speech shows a great deal of respect for the Institute. VMI would be foolish not to allow him to speak. The school has hosted Allen Ginsberg in the 1980s/90s, and recently gave Secretary Clinton an award for her service. Colleges should expose their students to all types of points of view, and I think my school has done a good job with that.

Cadets, with some exceptions, are smart people. They will be able to make up their own minds.

Well put.
