Room and Board

Singaporemom,

You are amazing!

I will offer one clarification. Your first reference to St. John's is to both the College of St. Benedict (womens) and St. Johns (Men) in Minnesota. I just happened to be familiar with the situation there and was able to identify specifically which St. Johns you were referring to (plenty of them around the country).

Thanks for the contribution. This thread should probably be made sticky by the mods as it will be popular.

I updated the ST John's information. Thanks.
It was just alot of cutting and pasting from the GoArmy website. I ran out of steam and didn't make it look pretty though! It's been our main resourse, and the kids really need to know this information. It can really help to know where to go for incentives like room and board. On average, that cost is about 8-10k! And to think, when I graduated from college (not so long ago:wink:) my student loan bill was $5k!!!

NROTC

:smile:SINGAPORE MOM!!! THANKS FOR DOING THIS! I NEED TO ADD A NOTE TO MAXIMUS' FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES STATEMENT FOR THOSE ON THIS PATH. NROTC COVERS TUITION AND $375 FOR BOOKS/SEMESTER, PLUS MIDSHIPMAN PAY OF $250/MONTH AS A FRESHMAN, GOING UP $50/MONTH EACH YEAR AT SCHOOL. BRIGHT FUTURES NOW ONLY GIVES YOU $126/CREDIT HOUR TO REIMBURSE WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE PAID FOR TUITION IF YOU HAVE 100% BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP, YOU CAN THEN USE THIS MONEY FOR HOUSING/ROOM AND BOARD. WE JUST RECEIVED MY SONS LETTER TO REPORT TO HIS UNIT AT FSU!!! NROTC ALSO PAYS TRAVEL EXPENSES TO GET TO HIS UNIT :thumb:

I didn't have info on NROTC so I just limited my search to AROTC. But, I'm sure that if any of these schools also offer NROTC or AFROTC then they give the room and board. Just don't quote me on that!

Bowling Green State University (BGSU)

Where can I find the room and board info. When my son spoke to BGSU last spring, they said there were no extra incentives.

He did get an email from Univ of Dayton, that said they offered a room and board incentive

I found it!

I went to the goarmy page and was able to find the room and board incentive for BGSU. Must be new for Fall 2010 as it wasn't there last spring, but that's great!

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

R&B Ohio

If I read most of these posts correctly, it is possible to get an Academic scholarship, say from Ohio State, and also a full NROTC scholarship. Is that correct?

I'm not sure this belongs in this thread, but the answer is Yes. Keep in mind that the total between them will not exceed tuition, books, fees and room and board and may not actually cover all these items.

It depends

The answer is NOT an unqualified "Yes." Some schools make you decide which scholarship you want to accept (see, e.g., Tulane). Some make it clear that it is applicable to R&B while others restrict the application to tuition/fees only. The best answer is to contact the school after checking the website.

Where did you find this information?

I am updating the list that singaporemom did (many changes since she compiled this in July!) for our college counselor. I can't find anything about Case Western. Even went to their AROTC web site - nothing.

I am also working on compiling the same info for NROTC and AFROTC for our counselor. I can't believe how many more schools are offering incentives for AROTC than AFROTC and NROTC. Any thoughts as to why?

aglages-
I looked at that site and I interpret the mention of "ROTC" as specifically AFROTC and is not referring to all services. Since it is not mentioned on AROTC site or the Case Westerns site, I am going to say that they are referring to AFROTC only. Therefore, I am not going to include that information on the AROTC list of extra incentives. Just my opinion.

Since you are maintaining the list then of course it is your decision.
I will say that Case has NO ROTC units on campus. For Air Force you must travel to Kent State (1 hour drive) and for Army... John Carroll (9 minutes). I find it hard to imagine how (or why) Case would offer a "discount" to AFROTC students (taking ROTC classes at KSU) but not AROTC students just down the road at John Carroll. Seems the Army would have a bad attitude about the inequality of the situation. Just my opinion....

when my son visited Mount Union college, a cross town with Kent State, this past summer, admissions at MUC did not even know they had an AFROTC cross town w/ KSU...the only flyers they had there were for AROTC and that's all they knew about. It's a guess, but I'm wondering if the differences in offers being listed is based on marketing, or lack thereof, and the options apply to all services.

homewith4 - are you saying positively that Mount Union HAS a cross-town AFROTC with Kent? I am trying to be accurate with my update and am relying on each service's ROTC site. AROTC site has Mount Union listed as a cross-town. AFROTC and NROTC sites do not have Mount Union listed at all. Looks like Mount Union ONLY has AROTC (through Kent).
If you know for sure that Mount Union has a cross-town AFROTC with Kent, then my theory of each service's site as being the definitive authority has been blown out of the water.

Elgible? or it it a lock

In looking at some of the websites, they hedge the R&B as "those with ROTC scholarships are eligible for R&B" rather than stating that they "will receive" R&B scholarships. Are their schools (not based on major, like GWU) which award R&B scholarships to SOME but not ALL of the mids (I am specifically thinking of NROTC)?

I just learned from the AROTC ROO at Wake Forest that WFU is no longer providing full R&B to scholarship winners. Instead, the school will subsidize the first $5,000 of R&B.

University of Tampa has made changes as well. They are giving $2215 per semester towards housing and 15 meals per week for food.
Looks like Georgetown is no longer offering full R&B either.
