I know that there have been previous posts about this, but how bad is living in the barracks? As a female, what should I expect?

Rooms are terrible. A matter of fact you should turn down your appointment because rooms are so bad.

What is your experience? Have you ever lived in a dormitory setting? Have you stayed many nights at five star hotels?

If you were concerned about getting nice rooms, Navy/Air Force/Coast Guard might have a better choice.

Kidding aside, all depends on. If you are lucky, maybe a room on the first floor vs room on the fifth floor. More than likely you will be in a three female cadet room. More than likely you should be somewhat close to a female shower. For females, your choices of roommates will be limited as more than likely there will be 4 to 6 females per class year per company. I don't recall different classes being roommates.

Current Cadet Says Brace Yourself

I live in Grant Barracks now, which are the oldest on post (not counting Pershing, which, though constructed in 1895 were renovated). The window is popped out. The sink leaks. The mirror cabinet doesn't close. The tiles are broken. I have two holes in my wall and I'm pretty sure I'm sucking asbestos every day.

But then I think when I'm an officer and have BAH, I will definitely appreciate my house more. In all reality, the things that are wrong with the barracks are little things, and I wouldn't get too hung up on them. On the other hand, I went to all 3 Summer Seminars, and air force w/o a doubt had the nicest rooms.

Oh well, at least I'm not going into the Air Force!

Are they planning to reconstruct the barracks? Is there any place I can go to look at pictures of inside the barracks?

Its all relative. When I was cold and freezing sleeping outside I couldn't wait to get back to my crappy room. When I was quartered in an abandoned factory overseas with my company as a LT sleeping on a cot with rats running through the rafters I really missed my drafty room back at school. It will be what you make of it. When I got my crazy second semester roommate. I missed my less crazy first semester roommate. So it goes.

There was a plan to build a new barracks but I am not sure if recent budget cuts have affected that plan. If the new barracks were built, they would begin renovating the older barracks.

When DS and I attended the Founder's Day dinner last month, BG Timothy Trainor (Dean of Academics) showed a powerpoint and said new barracks construction would be ready for the incoming classes in 2016 or 2017. He showed a few pictures but I don't remember if it was renovating and/or building new barracks.

A new barracks as of now is under construction and will be named Schwarzkopf Barracks (located on the hill behind Sherman Barracks). It is scheduled as of now to be complete by 2016. Also, current barracks are under renovation and will be closed, renovated, and reopened one or so at a time until the last renovation (Sherman) is done by about 2021. At least that's what they told us.

-New barracks haven't been officially named yet. There's a committee that has it down to 5 options as of now

-barracks quality isn't so bad, it's all the construction that kills it. The jackhammers start every morning at 6 and don't stop until 5! You really should go to another school :thumb:
