(I put this in "off topic" because RPI is not a military college and I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to put it in the USNA forum. Please move it if this is out of place!)
    Hey everyone!

Well, I'm starting to think about my Plan-Bs now, since I still have yet to hear anything from the Academy. So far, I have 5 acceptances (RIT, VT, Pitt, RPI, and Drexel), 3 WLs (GT, UMich and Bowdoin), and I only have 9 schools left to hear from (the Ivies and USNA).

As of right now, RPI is giving us the best Financial Aid package, so it seems like that is where I'll end up, unless I get into an Ivy League (they all meet 100% of demonstrated need) or USNA. My best friend's mom both attended and did NROTC at RPI, and she said she loved it. She told me, though, that since she was there back in the '80s, things may have changed. Does anyone have any recent experience with RPI's NROTC program? Or just their ROTC program in general? I'd love to hear about it!!
All feedback is appreciated, thank you!! :)

My brother was there 90-94, so can't help reflect the now. He liked it tremendously.

Have you visited or called cadre? Visits helped DS make final choice.

I have not visited, unfortunately it is a 5hr drive away and with work and school it is not feasible right now. I didn't visit any of the schools I applied to except USNA; travel expenses were $$.

Maybe you should have applied to fewer schools but visited some... in the WINTER... if you love snow, you'll love RIT.

It wouldn't have mattered if I had applied to less; my mom isn't willing to pay for travel expenses, and even with a job, I can't afford to drive that far and take time off from school. I already know I'm not going to RIT, unfortunately... I heard it's beautiful up there.

Times sure have changed - I applied to only three colleges. On the other hand I asked something like 14 different girls to the senior prom. Rejected outright by 11 and wait-listed by 3.

Well, 30 years ago today RPI's hockey team won the NCAA title. I just saw this on a tweet and I thought it was fitting to pass that info along.

EDelahanty: Haha. I hope you ended up with a date eventually! Every senior I know applied to 7 colleges at most. When I told my counselors that I had narrowed down my initial list of 32 to 19, they suggested that I narrow it down more, but I disagreed. Being the first in my family to go to college, I wanted to make sure that I had every possible avenue open should I not receive an appointment to USNA. As the saying goes, "you miss every shot you don't take."

LITS: Ah, fun! Although I don't follow professional Hockey, I do find it an entertaining sport. Thanks!

... So, uh... I guess it's safe to say that we don't have any recent RPI students/alums on here... or maybe they just haven't logged on in a while.

Did you have to pay a $40-$50 application fee at each of those 19 schools? That's a good chunk of change. Your mom was pretty generous and understanding to have covered all of those costs if she did. More so than I would have been.

Nope, I had application fee waivers for every single application. I paid a total of $0 to apply for college.

Oh, that's a relief. I was feeling sorry for your mom having to pay all of those application fees. I had thought there was a limit of four fee waivers or something like that.

I imagine if you attack your schooling with as much enthusiasm as the application process, you'll do well. It makes me tired just thinking about 19 applications. .

Good luck with your applications. I hope you end up at a school where you flourish.

Apologies. I read it in my muddled brain as RIT.

SDMom: I was granted 9 fee waivers through the Questbridge program (I'm a QB Finalist) and 4 fee waivers each time I took the SATs, for a total of 21 fee waivers. After narrowing down my list, I found that I only needed 19. Trust me, if I'd had to pay for the applications, I would've only applied to 2 or 3 schools. There were a lot of sleepless nights spent tweaking essays, and a lot of meal-less lunches spent presenting the essays to teachers to see if they thought it was good enough for an application essay. I'm sure I'm going to put my all into my schoolwork, wherever I end up; I intend to take college very seriously. Thank you for the well wishes!

fencersmother: Don't worry! You're not the first :) haha.

I didn't realize it was four free apps for each SAT. I learned something. I also hadn't heard of Questbridge, so I looked it up. Congratulations on the Questbridge finalist!

So, you've already taught me a couple of things that I can share with kids in our community who would qualify for those programs. Do you happen to know if ACT also has the same program? I never see the SAT offered here, just the ACT.

I'm sure you'll do well wherever you go. (But I'm crossing my fingers that you'll get into USNA.)

I didn't realize that either; when I received 4 waivers in the mail after the second time I took the SAT, I assumed it was a mistake, and the third time I was pleasantly surprised! Thank you!

And I do not believe that ACT has as similar program. Also, getting a fee waiver for the ACT is extremely difficult. The ACT website told me I had to get it from my school, and my school told me I had to get it from the people who run the ACT... long story short, after fifteen phone calls and getting my call transferred "from here to there and back", so to speak, I still ended up having to pay for the full ACT+W (that's why I only took it once). So that alone leads me to believe that they do not offer application fee waivers.

Thanks, I'm trying to get hyped-up for RPI. Hopefully I won't need all that hype, though. Sitting in my dining room, watching the mailbox right now... haha!

Oh goodness, there's an ROTC forum; I feel a little stupid now! Haha. I must've missed it when I was going down the page to look for a place to post this.

    Thank you!
