ROTC Involvement

Coordinate a visit with the ROTC unit of your choosing where you sit in on military classes, attend PT, attend drill/lab, etc. If you can get yourself there, the unit should be more than willing to facilitate.

Thank you for all your help and info. Its greatly appreciated. Would the AROTC time commitments be similar to that of NROTC?
http://armyrotc.nd.edu/cadet-life/ here is the ND AROTC unit page. My DS does not go there but is AROTC 3 yr Scholarship winner but not contracted yet. Unit PT is MWT 5am he does his Trainer workout 5am Tuesdays and also does his run 5am on Fridays he also works out in Wellness Center 1 - 2 hours a day in addition to unit PT. He has his Leadership class and Lab on Thursdays but they often have 'Super Labs' so instead of 2 or 3 weekly one hour labs they have had a couple, is going to one today, where the AROTC and AFROTC units of several schools are doing a combined full day lab with starting the day AROTC vs AFROTC flag football for an hour then have 4 training classes with groups changing lecture/application every hour. They have several volunteer opportunities for community events even worked security for the Talladega races last month. There are only two frats at his school one is mostly ROTC cadets so he pledged that, they also had volunteer opportunities which count for AROTC too for community Service hours. They have a required amount of study hours for both AROTC and his frat in the Learning Centers but want to see the cadet actually really using the resources not just sitting in there screwing around, they are also wanting to see cadets involved in campus events. DS is very lucky that his HS Dual enrollment credits let him have easy load of 3 degree program classes and his ROTC classes and even with that little class time he has weeks where he has something extra scheduled every day be it Color Guard at games, study groups or fraternity events. If they are also on Ranger Challenge or Drill teams that would be even more challenging to schedule in. Time management is going to surprise you big time when you get to school so don't think you aren't going to have little ROTC at a traditional school. I really thought DS would need the extreme structure of a SMC but after this semester I'm very happy he is doing well at time management and actually started using planners and other organization tools I begged, pleaded and grouched about him needing to learn to use in high school. :eek2: I think had he gone to a SMC he would still be 'dependent' on being told when to do what so would still not have to learn those skills. He was allowed to have his car at a regular college and has a dorm room where it is 4 private rooms with a shared kitchenette/living room; that suits his early to bed for early rise style. He doesn't have to add keeping room inspection ready and has ability to miss a week of laundry without being messed up since only has to wear uniform once or at most three times a week for an hour or so. You should talk to cadets at schools, SA and SMCs you are interested in ask admissions if there are multi day/over night visit programs that pair you with a cadet that you room with them (some you would be on a cot) go to classes and any extracurricular clubs activities you are interested in. If you have limited funds or family resources would preclude visits ask about travel scholarships. We know Norwich and the SA offer these because DS got them. Even seeing if friends or family live near colleges they would like to visit. We were so very lucky that my cousin used his FF miles to fly DS to his home and he took off work to take DS to colleges in 3 states. It does not hurt to ask there maybe friends and family that have FF miles they are willing to give your DD/S to help with being able to find that best fit school. Great luck to all to find that right fit.
