I just helped DS shop for new running shoes for all the miles he will put in before BCT :biggrin:and it prompted a question. On I Day are they "given" running shoes? Is there one brand/style for everyone or are there some choices for different kinds of feet and running styles/needs. I'm thinking of stability shoes vs. cushion shoes, over-pronators vs. neutral foot strike, etc.

    Thanks for your help.

Good question. I am a severe pronator and without that support my knee will typically move out of alignment.

You are given running shoes at in-processing; as a matter of fact you wear those for the first few days so you can adjust to the boots. I think they were some sort of New Balance ones for 2013.
I know you are allowed to bring your own inserts and if you have specially made ones bring those.
I'd suggest in-processing in the running shoes you'd like to wear if allowed - that way you have them.
You are also allowed (and recommended to bring) molded cleats for intramurals.

I brought my own running shoes but they did not let me wear them. Instead, we had to wear our issued New Balance ones.

But come to In-Processing in your own tennis shoes. After BCT is over, you will be allowed to wear your own tennis shoes and that way you will have them as soon as you are allowed to wear them.

Should we bring these to BCT?

Are they the New Balance 992s that say "USA" on the back? I have those and they are certainly cushiony and able to take a beating, but they are so big and bulky that it feels like I am running with miniature couches strapped to my feet.

There is a variety of different shoes they issue. Some people get that kind, others get another kind. It all depends on what they have.

you can bring/buy your own insoles during basic, but dont count on being allowed to wear your own shoes. after basic, though, you can wear what you want shoe-wise.

My C4C son did not think the issued New Balance tennis shoes were that great. He was glad after BCT to have his Asiics back.

That really sucks. I hate New Balance. They tend to have a wider toe box and don't fit my feet properly. I worked at a running store for a year and got addicted to the Asics Kayanoes and Saucony Hurricanes. I have continued to run in the Asics Kayanoes and Saucony Hurricanes since I stopped working there. I miss my discount. I loved the Asics Kayanoes but prefer the Hurricanes. The Kayanoes tend to wear before the normal 400-450 mile range(at least for me).
They probably want us all wearing the same brand. I understand that. I just hope they switch back to Asics or Saucony if I get in.

Once BCT is over, you can wear almost whatever running shoes you want.

I really like NB. The large shape is good for my size 13 4E feet.
I know the sizing of clothing can be greatly off what is needed, but are they more peculiar with shoes due to the risk of injury? Like I said, I have large feet, and I am afraid of receiving something that will cause large blisters or a twisted ankle (my foot hangs over skinny shoes and throws me off. lol).

So is it worth wearing running shoes and carrying boots (if we get them at orientation), or in that case would you skip the shoes until PW? Or do you want to have them just in case? (Or would you look really stupid on the plane in boots? )
