SA prep without scholarship?

Currently one of the many with "candidate" still written on the USAFA application after a TWE back in March. Set up plan B of doing ROTC (not on a scholarship) in college, but still really have my heart set on going to a prep school. I've been told that it is possible to go to a service academy prep school without a scholarship, but I just have a couple questions...

-How much does going to SA prep increase a person's chances?
-Is it still possible to apply this late in the game?
-What prep schools schools are there & what are the locations?
-If anyone has attended... how was your experience?
-What other expenses do you have besides room/board, books & tuition?
-If I have received scholarships through different organizations, will I be able to use them towards prep school tuition? (meaning: would they accept them?)
-Are the classes at the SA prep schools college credit/transferable?

Thank you very much to anyone who takes the time to reply to this. Any advice is appreciated! :)

Hi usafm95

Many of your questions can be answered by browsing around on this forum. The AFA prepsters seem to be especially active! You will learn what the schools are, other's prep experiences, and all of the particulars involved.

Attending a prep-school without a scholarship is referred to as being a "self-prep". You may also want to do a search of the AFA forum for self-prep.

-Is it still possible to apply this late in the game?

I would assume some schools still have room left for this fall's incoming class. I suggest you call the schools this coming week and see if you aren't too late.

-Are the classes at the SA prep schools college credit/transferable?

The U.S. service academies only accept transfer credits from the other service academies. Everyone who goes to prep school (or another college, for that matter) and then to an academy is starting from scratch. It is possible that the credits earned at a prep school will transfer to a traditional college, but is dependent on both the particular prep and the specific college.
