My DD has been offered a spot in the USCGA Scholars Program and we couldn't be more thrilled. They use both MMI and GMC as the two prep schools. We will find out which one she will be attending later in the spring.

I have looked at the city data for both towns, and the crime rates for both seem awfully high. I am sure the actual campuses are pretty safe, but can anyone comment on safety off-campus? How often do the kids even go off-campus? DD likes to go for long runs, and this is one thing that concerns me.

First of all, congratulations to your daughter for being accepted into the CGAS program. My best friends here are "coasties" and seem to be very happy and excited for their future at USCGA.
I have been off campus many times and to several different locations in Alabama. I personally have never had a problem. There is a safety briefing every Friday here at MMI before we get leave, and certain places in the town itself that are off limits. If you're not where you shouldn't be, then I would say the risk is low. When it comes to running, there is usually only one route I take unless I'm running for PT in the morning. I haven't felt unsafe running it and have done it alone before. The biggest concern I have is all the travel when you're here and decide to go to Tuscaloosa for dinner or other various activities. It is an hour drive, and yet the closest place for any entertainment (bowling, movies, sit down restaurants, etc). I have had a couple of friends get in bad wrecks (cars were totalled, and both were kind of freak accidents. Could've happened to anyone) but have come out alive and VERY lucky.
In my opinion, you don't have to worry about your daughter if she attends MMI. I'm sure it's the same for GMC. My advice is to make good decisions. Don't put yourself in a risky situation (going into a shady gas station at 2 am, for example) and you will be just fine.

In that case, you might not want to look at New London's crime rates.

Haley, thanks for you good wishes! When we learned of her offer, part of me wanted to shout if from the rooftops, but another part held back. It is very humbling to see that with all of these really impressive applicants, they saw something in my kid.

Thanks for your feedback about safety.

It is funny, Luigi, I never even thought to look up info on New London! We went to CFAD and stayed in Mystic while she was there. Everything seemed fine to me, so I didn't give it a second thought. We didn't look around New London, however. Might be a good idea, huh?

My DS attends Marion. Never has he felt endangered, nor have they had any violence on the campus( knock on wood.) I would echo the statements Haley M made.

As with any military situation with young adults going out into a strange town, they should ALWAYS use the buddy system, whether they are told to or not. You're just asking for trouble, anywhere, to be out there alone.

I have a friend at MMI and she seems to be doing well.

I would definitely echo what Haleym said. If you don't put yourself in bad situations then you should be fine at either.

The Georgia Military College safety record is outstanding. Students have every reason to feel safe throughout the community. Cadets who enjoy running have a variety of on-campus routes they can use to include scenic and well maintained routes along the Oconee River, which flows adjacent to college property. The college annual crime and safety report can be viewed on the Georgia Military College webpage under "Student Life/Campus Police"

    Nicole,

I am actually attending Georgia Military College this year along with seventeen other Coast Guard Academy Scholars. I also enjoy taking long runs around the area, and I have not had to worry about any conflicts so far. It's a small town, so there is not much that goes on. However, I do recommend that your child uses the buddy system and not to go anywhere alone. That should apply to anywhere you go, whether the crime rates are high or not, because it is always good to have company in case of an emergency. My shipmates and I spend most of our leisure time downtown, and we have yet to encounter any problems, so I wouldn't worry about the crime here in Milledgeville. Georgia Military College is a great institution, and it's a safe place to be.

If you have any other concerns, please let me know and I will be glad to help.

Thank you again everyone for your answers, I appreciate it.

Ivonne, thank you for your offer to help. It is good to know you can fill me in on GMC! When we find out where DD is going, I may be calling on you.

When you think about it, it is silly that I am worrying about her being in a high crime area. She is going to be in a lot more dangerous situations in the coming years. Oh man, I see many sleepless nights in my future.
