DS is attending NASS s3 - he's thrilled! Attended USNA STEM in 2014. HS class size is 520 - he's top 10%. Takes all AP courses & is in Project Lead the Way (engineering) program 9th, 10th, 11th. In June, he's headed to Boy's State in Austin, then will go directly to USNA. He has played var-Water Polo & var-Swim Team all 3 years. He is 5'5" , 135 lbs. If you ask him what he wants to do: "serve my country, fly planes, race sailboats. Biggest passions are avid reading, sailing & racing dinghies. Also has lot's of tutoring, church youth team leadership, Spanish club & NHS hours. Plans to take ACT & retake SAT asap.
1st SAT scores:
Reading 740
Math 630
Writing 560.
Does the sailing, swim & water polo help his package? Is he competitive?? Any thoughts on the value of taking Creative Writing & AP Chinese 1 during his sr. year? (Already completed 3 yrs Pre-AP Spanish I, II, III).
All insights will be much appreciated! THANKS ;-)

Take a look at the Navy Sports website. Do some research and see if he measures up in swimming or water polo. Water polo Navy traditionally has a top 10 team, some years even top 5. Sailing might be his best bet if he times or accolades don't measure up in the other sports. He will only have time for 1 sport in college, what is his passion and/or best sport? Fill out the recruitment info sheet and send it in. Sailing has a variety of folks with various experience.

His stats look good. Continue to work on SATs. Get going on application and Noms this summer. Get it all done early and be ready for the long wait!

Not to sway your son from the Navy, but your ds might want to consider his enthusiasm for water activities as a possible good fit for the Coast Guard Academy. If I loved to sail, the Coast Guard would be my first choice. :)

(Thank you ! for the good advice & tips).
He's a disciplined & strong swimmer & water polo player, but is realistic about not being a tall athlete in sports that favor height. At the helm of sailboat- he has natural talent; and is well sized for dinghies & as crew, helmsman on keelboats (VOST). Foredeck is another spot for lightweight, strong sailors. This Spring, he submitted a form to USNA sailing coaches (heard nothing back yet). He doesn't have national regatta experience (too costly for our budget) which worries us.

He will be fine from a sailing perspective. There are Mids every year who join sailing with no experience. If I remember correctly they still have some folks competing and also sailing is a huge summer program at Navy. They are processing the new Ensigns and alumni in who will be helping out for the summer training. Sailing department is more than likely, very busy right now. I would recommend as you start to complete the application reach out to them again as they will start to look at the next year.

That's very helpful- Thank you for the insights about how things work this time of year, etc. Each week we learn new things about this SA application adventure.... it's a lot to coordinate.
(DS Received official candidate letter today!)
