She was a real American pioneer. RIP Dr Sally K. Ride.

Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died Monday after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, her company said. She was 61.
"Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless,"

Her partner of 27 years, Dr. Tam O'Shaughnessy was no slacker either.

Shameful she will be denied federal benefits because of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Like Ride, O’Shaughnessy was also interested in science from an early age. She earned bachelors and masters degrees in biology from Georgia State University, taught college biology and eventually earned a doctorate degree in school psychology from the University of California, Riverside.

She has written nine children’s science books and helped found Sally Ride Science “because of her long-standing commitment to science education and her recognition of the importance of supporting girls' interests in science," according to the foundation’s website.

Though Ride was open about her partnership with O'Shaughnessy, it does not appear to have been a controversial topic.

The two became partners in 1985 -- two years after Ride's history-making NASA flight -- but they first met while playing tennis at the age of 12 years old. They were together until the very end, when Ride died Monday in La Jolla, Calif., after inspiring a nation to dream big.
