After not being selected for summer seminar, I'm looking into the SAME Camp held at USAFA. I'm into math and science but not sure if a week of engineering is right for me. Would guys mind sharing your experiences at the camp? Thank you!

The week was a blast. We built a lot, used quite a bit of math actually and science. You also get to have a your of the academy. Each day at the camp is around a different aspect of civil engineering and there's a large group project each day.
If your not into engineering I would hesitate to go. But I thought it was a awesome experience last year.

My DS loved it. There were different engineering projects each day and the "flights" competed against each other. There were good hands on lessons in teamwork and leadership as they worked on projects together.
He really enjoyed getting to tour the AFA, eat in the dining hall, see the engineering classrooms, and attend the chapel.

Don't get down about not getting into the summer seminar, I didn't either and now I'm appointed to the class of 2018. The seminar is used as a partial marketing tool to get more kids interested in the academy. My friend went last year and was denied the same day I was accepted.

Go if you can.

DS also was not selected for SS. He attended the SAME camp in 2010. As a result of conversations with cadre and senior staff, he confirmed that USAFA was the place for him. They had a lot of fun with the tasks that were engineering based team building activities. Afterwards, he gave a presentation to the SAME post that sponsored him. He grew a lot and had a good time. Boys State and SAME were 2 'jewels' that sparkled his rising senior summer. I have no evidence, but I believe participating in the SAME camp helped his application. I encourage you to apply and go if you can.

Oh, DS is currently a C2C Civil Engineering major.

Best wishes. :thumb:

Is it common for SAME posts to cover the cost of the camp and airfare?

My DD went to SAME last summer, she thought it was a great experience. The SAME post paid for part of the tuition and offered for the air fare. We however, drove her there. We wanted to see the last day presentation and made it part of our family vacation. She also raised money during the summer and donated it back to the SAME branch, which she gave them when she did the presentation. They were wowed by her giving back, but it was something she really wanted to do. She got her appointment to the academy already. I am not sure of it had any influence on her appointment, but it did on her career focus. She still plans on trying to be a pilot, but CE is her focus. She likes to say she will be well rounded, she can blow it up and help them re built it.

The post that sponsored my son paid the tuition and airfare in full which was terrific!
